The red fan and the blue fan

옛날 어느 마을에 가난하지만 착한 마음씨를 가진 착한 할아버지와 욕심만 가득한 부자 할아버지가 살고 있었어요.
Once upon a time, there lived a poor but warm-hearted old man and a rich old man full of greed.

어느 날, 흉년이 들어 먹을 것이 없었던 착한 할아버지는 보리쌀을 빌리러 부자 할아버지를 찾아갔어요.
One day, the kind old man, who didn’t have anything to eat due to the bad harvest, went to visit the rich old man to borrow some grains of barley.

하지만 착한 할아버지가 부자 할아버지에게서 빌려 온 보리쌀 한 가마니를 열어 보니 온통 보리쌀 껍질과 모래뿐이었어요.
But when the kind old man opened the bag of barley that he had borrowed from the rich old man, there were only barley peels and sand.

착한 할아버지는 그걸로 대충 끼니를 때운 뒤 빌린 보리쌀 한 가마니를 갚기 위해 다시 부자 할아버지를 찾아갔어요.
The kind old man made do with that and went to the rich old man to pay back a bag of barley that he had borrowed.

그러자 부자 할아버지는 착한 할아버지에게 이자도 갚으라며 소리쳤어요.
And the rich old man yelled at the kind old man, telling him to pay back interest as well.

가진 것이 없는 착한 할아버지는 매일 나무 한 짐씩 해 주기로 약속했어요.
The kind old man had nothing, so he made a promise that he would give a load of wood everyday.

그러던 어느 날 밤, 지나가던 나그네가 착한 할아버지 댁의 문을 두드렸어요.
Then one night, a traveler who was passing by knocked on the door of the kind old man.

“하룻밤만 묵어가도 되겠습니까?”
“Can I stay here just for a night?”

“누추하지만 어서 들어오세요."
“It’s shabby here but come on in.”

착한 할아버지는 나그네에게 방을 내어 주고 보리쌀로 죽을 끓여 주었어요.
The kind old man gave him a room and cooked him some porridge with barley.

다음 날 아침, 나그네가 묵던 방에 가 보니 나그네는 없고 부채 두 개만 덩그라니 놓여져 있었어요.
The next morning, he went to the room where the traveler was staying, but he was not there and just two fans were lying there.

하나는 파란 부채, 또 하나는 빨간 부채였어요.
One was a blue fan and the other one was a red one.

마침 너무 더웠던 할아버지가 빨간 부채를 부치기 시작했어요.
The old man was very hot right at the moment, so he started to fan himself with the red fan.

그런데 갑자기 할아버지의 코가 길어졌어요.
Then, all of a sudden, the old man’s nose got longer.

놀란 할아버지가 이번에는 파란 부채를 부치자 코가 다시 줄어들었어요.
Surprised, the old man started fanning himself with the blue fan this time, and his nose shrank again.

“이게 바로 요술 부채로구나!”
“This is a magic fan!”

할아버지는 나그네를 다시 만나면 부채를 돌려주려고 부채를 가지고 다녔어요.
The old man was carrying the fans so that he could give them back to the traveler if he meets the traveler again.

착한 할아버지가 빌린 보리쌀의 이자를 갚으러 나무를 한 짐 해서 부자 할아버지네로 갔어 요.
The kind old man cut a load of wood and went to the rich old man’s house to pay back the interest for the barley.

그런데 부채를 가지고 있던 착한 할아버지는 욕심 많은 부자 할아버지에게 그만 부채를 빼 앗기고 말았어요.
But the kind old man, who was carrying the fans, ended up having the fans taken by the greedy and rich old man.

“자네, 그 부채를 나에게 이자로 주게.”
“Hey, give me those fans as the interest.”

“안 되네. 이건 내 것이 아니라서 주인을 만나면 돌려줘야 하네."
“No, I can’t. These are not mine so I have to give them back when I meet the owner.”

요술 부채가 욕심이 났던 부자 할아버지는 그 부채를 자신의 집과 바꾸기로 했어요.
The rich old man, who really wanted to have the fans, decided to exchange his house for the fans.

그렇게 억지로 요술 부채를 얻은 부자 할아버지는 부채를 이용해서 돈을 벌 생각에 기분이 좋았어요.
Like that, the rich old man got the fans by insisting, and was excited at the thought of making money using the fans.

부자 할아버지는 빨간 부채로 마을 사람들의 코를 늘려 놓은 뒤 큰 돈을 받고 다시 파란 부채를 부쳐 코를 원래대로 돌려 놓았어요.
The rich old man made villagers’ noses longer with the red fan and after that, he made them return to the original size with the blue fan, after getting paid a lot of money.

어느 날, 심심했던 부자 할아버지는 궁금해지기 시작했어요.
One day, the rich old man got bored and started to wonder.

“이 부채로 코를 늘이면 얼마나 길어질까?”
“How long can this fan make my nose?”

부자 할아버지는 빨간 부채로 코를 늘이기 시작했어요.
The rich old man started to make his nose longer with the red fan.

처음에는 코가 방망이만큼 커지더니 지붕을 뚫고 하늘로 올라갔어요.
At first, his nose got as big as a bat, and then went up to the sky through the roof.

하늘 위까지 올라온 코를 본 옥황상제는 화가 났어요.
The Great Jade Emperor in the sky got angry to see the nose that came up to the sky.

“감히 하늘을 넘보다니. 저것을 기둥에 묶도록 하여라!”
“How dare you covet the sky. Tie it up to a pillar!”

그러자 부자 할아버지의 코가 아파 오기 시작했어요.
And then, the rich old man’s nose started to hurt.

부자 할아버지는 코가 묶여 있는지도 모른 채 코를 다시 줄이기 위해 파란 부채를 부치기 시작했어요.
The rich old man started to fan himself with the blue fan to make his nose smaller again, not knowing that his nose was tied up.

그런데 코가 줄어들수록 부자 할아버지의 몸은 점점 하늘로 올라갔어요.
But, as his nose got smaller, his body gradually went up to the sky.

그새 화가 풀린 옥황상제는 코를 다시 풀어 주라고 했어요.
Meanwhile, the Great Jade Emperor became less angry and ordered to release the nose.

신하들이 코를 풀자 부자 할아버지는 하늘에서 떨어지고 말았어요.
His subordinates released his nose and the old man ended up falling from the sky.

그날 이후로 욕심쟁이 할아버지를 본 사람은 아무도 없대요.
After that day, no one has ever seen the greedy old man again.

한편 착한 할아버지는 부채와 바꾼 큰 집에서 부자 할아버지가 남들에게 빼앗은 쌀과 돈을 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 주며 오래오래 행복하게 살았답니다.
Meanwhile, the kind old man lived happily ever after in the big house that he exchanged with the fans, distributing rice and money, which the rich old man had taken from others, to poor people.
