소가 된 게으름뱅이
The lazy man who became a cow

옛날 어느 마을에 일하기 싫어하는 게으름뱅이가 살고 있었어요.
Once upon a time in a village, there lived a lazy person who hated working.

게으름뱅이의 부인은 하루 종일 잠만 자는 남편이 한심했어요.
The lazy person’s wife felt that her husband who only slept all day long was pathetic.

"여보, 이제 당신도 나가서 일 좀 해요. 남들처럼 일을 해야 우리도 먹고 살 것 아니겠어요?”
“Honey. Why don’t you go out and get some work done now? You should work like others so we can make a living.”

어느 날, 부인의 잔소리가 듣기 싫었던 게으름뱅이는 집을 나가 버렸어요.
One day, the lazy person went out of the house because he didn’t want to hear his wife’s nagging.

산책을 하던 게으름뱅이는 그늘에서 풀을 뜯어 먹고 있던 소를 보고 생각했어요.
While taking a walk, the lazy person saw a cow that was grazing and thought,

‘저 소는 일도 안 하고 한가롭게 풀만 먹고 있네. 아, 나도 소가 된다면 얼마나 좋을까?’
‘That cow is not working but just idly grazing. Ah, I wish I could become a cow.’

그때 마침 지나가던 노인이 게으름뱅이에게 말을 걸었어요.
An old man who was passing by just at that moment talked to him.

“자네, 소가 되고 싶나? 이 탈을 한번 써 보게. 이 탈을 쓰면 소가 될 거야."
“Hey you, do you want to be a cow? Try this mask on. You will become a cow if you wear this mask.”

“네? 정말이에요? 정말 이 탈을 쓰면 소가 되나요?”
“What? Seriously? Will I really become a cow if I put this mask on?”

게으름뱅이는 얼른 탈을 받아 썼어요.
The lazy person took the mask right away and put it on.

“펑!" 하는 소리가 나더니 게으름뱅이가 정말 소로 변해 버렸어요.
With a big sound that went “Boom!”, the lazy person really turned into a cow.

“이야! 내가 정말 소가 되었어!”
“Wow! I really became a cow!”

게으름뱅이는 이제부터 먹고 자기만 할 생각에 신이 났어요.
The lazy person got excited at the thought of only eating and sleeping from now on.

그런데 그때, 탈을 건네준 노인이 소가 된 게으름뱅이를 끌고 가기 시작했어요.
But then, the old man who gave him the mask started to drag the lazy person who had become a cow.

“이랴! 이놈의 소야, 얼른 가자.”
“Giddy up! Come on, cow. Let’s go!”

노인은 소를 한 농부에게 팔아 버렸어요.
The old man sold the cow to a farmer.

노인은 소를 농부에게 넘기며 말했어요.
The old man told the farmer as he passed him the cow.

“절대 이 소에게 무를 먹이지 마시오. 이 소는 무를 먹으면 죽습니다.”
“Never feed the cow white radish. This cow will die if it eats radish.”

“그것 참 이상한 소네요.”
“That’s a strange cow.”

“아니에요! 나는 소가 아니에요! 나는 사람이라고요!”
“No! I am not a cow! I am a man!”

소가 된 게으름뱅이가 소리쳤어요.
The lazy person who had become a cow shouted.

하지만 소의 입에서 나오는 소리는 '음메' 하는 소 울음뿐이었어요.
But, the sound that came out from the cow’s mouth was only the “moo” sound.

그날 이후, 소가 된 게으름뱅이는 농부의 밭에서 하루 종일 일을 했어요.
After that day, the lazy person who became a cow worked all day long at the farmer’s field.

“내가 게으름을 피우고 살아서 하늘이 벌을 주신 거야. 아이고 여보, 미안해.”
“I got punished by the heaven since I lived as a lazy person. Oh honey, I’m sorry.”

소가 된 게으름뱅이는 매일 쉬지도 못 하고 일을 하며 지난 세월을 뼈저리게 후회하고 반 성했어요.
The lazy person who became a cow worked every day without resting and deeply regretted and reflected on his past days.

그런데 그때, 저 앞에 무 밭이 보였어요.
And then, over there, he could see a radish field.

‘그래, 이렇게 살 바엔 차라리 무를 먹고 죽는 게 낫겠어.’
‘Alright, it would be better to eat a white radish and die if I have to keep living this way.’

죽기로 결심한 게으름뱅이는 무를 하나 뽑아 먹었어요.
The lazy person decided to die, so pulled out a white radish and ate it.

“펑" 소리가 나더니 신기한 일이 벌어졌어요.
There was a loud sound that went “Boom!” and then a strange thing happened.

게으름뱅이가 다시 이전의 사람 모습으로 변했어요.
The person turned back into a man.

“와! 내가 다시 사람이 되었어!”
“Wow! I became a man again!”

게으름뱅이는 너무 기뻐 소리쳤어요.
The lazy person shouted out of excitement.

집으로 돌아간 게으름뱅이는 누구보다 더 열심히 일하는 부지런한 사람이 되었답니다.
The lazy person went back home and became a diligent person who works harder than anybody.
