흥부와 놀부
Heungbu and Nolbu

옛날 어느 마을에 흥부와 놀부 두 형제가 살고 있었어요.
Once upon a time, in a village, there lived two brothers named Heung-bu and Nol-bu.

형 놀부는 마음씨가 고약했지만 동생 흥부는 마음씨가 아주 착했어요.
The older brother Nol-bu was ill-tempered, but the younger brother Heung-bu was very kind-hearted.

아버지가 돌아가시자 욕심쟁이 놀부는 재산을 모두 차지하고 동생 흥부와 흥부네 가족을 모두 내쫓았어요.
After their father passed away, greedy Nol-bu took possession of all his fortune and kicked out all of Heung-bu’s family.

흥부네 가족은 놀부에게 쫓겨나 산 밑에 오두막집을 짓고 살게 되었어요.
Heung-bu’s family got kicked out by Nol-bu, and ended up building a hut at the foot of a mountain and living there.

“아버지, 배고파요.”
“Father, I’m hungry.”

굶주린 아이들이 칭얼대자 흥부는 가슴이 아팠어요.
When his starving children whined, Heung-bu was heartbroken.

어쩔 수 없이 흥부는 놀부를 찾아갔어요.
He had no choice, so he went to visit Nol-bu.

“형님, 제발 보리쌀이라도 꿔 주세요."
“Brother, please lend me at least some barley grains.”

“네 이놈! 여기가 어디라고!”
“Hey you! How dare you come here!”

놀부는 빗자루를 들고 달려들고 형수는 주걱으로 흥부의 뺨을 찰싹 때렸어요.
Nol-bu went at him with a broom and Nol-bu’s wife slapped Heung-bu on his cheek with a rice paddle.

흥부는 주걱에 붙은 밥알이라도 얻을까 하고 또 뺨을 내밀었어요.
Heung-bu reached out his cheek again with hopes of getting some grains of rice that were stuck on the rice paddle.

하지만 흥부는 결국 음식을 얻지 못하고 돌아가야 했어요.
But in the end, Heung-bu had to go back without getting any food.

그리고 시간이 흘러 봄이 되었어요.
And some time passed and it was spring again.

제비 한 쌍이 흥부네 처마 밑에 둥지를 틀고 알을 낳았어요.
A couple of swallows built a nest under the eaves of Heung-bu’s house and laid eggs.

곧 새끼 제비들이 알을 까고 나왔어요.
Soon, baby swallows hatched from the eggs and came out.

그러던 어느 날, 새끼 제비 한 마리가 둥지에서 떨어져 다리를 다쳤어요.
Then one day, one of the baby swallows fell from the nest and injured its leg.

흥부는 새끼 제비를 가엾게 여기고 다리를 정성껏 치료해 주었어요.
Heung-bu felt pity for the baby swallow and treated it with care.

착한 흥부 덕분에 새끼 제비들이 무럭무럭 건강하게 자랐어요.
Thanks to kindhearted Heung-bu, the baby swallows grew up healthy.

시간이 흘러 가을이 되자, 제비 가족은 흥부네 둥지를 떠나 따듯한 남쪽 나라로 갈 준비를 했어요.
After some time passed and autumn came around, the swallow family prepared to leave their nest at Heung-bu’s house, and go to a warm country in the south.

“조심히 가거라! 내년에 꼭 다시 와야 해!”
“Travel safely! Make sure you come back next year!”

다음 해 봄, 제비들은 잊지 않고 다시 흥부네를 찾았어요.
The next spring, the swallows didn’t forget to come back to Heung-bu’s house.

그런데, 아빠 제비가 흥부의 머리 위를 빙빙 돌더니 입에 물고 있던 무언가를 툭 떨어뜨렸어요.
But then, the father swallow flew round and round above Heung-bu’s head and dropped something it was holding in its mouth.

바로 박씨였어요.
It was none other than gourd seeds.

흥부는 제비가 선물한 박씨를 땅에 심고 정성껏 길렀어요.
Heung-bu planted the gourd seeds that the swallow gave him and grew them with care.

가을이 되자, 커다란 박들이 지붕에 주렁주렁 열렸어요.
When it became fall, big gourds grew in clusters on the roof.

흥부 부부는 박을 따서 톱질을 하기 시작했어요.
The Heung-bu couple picked the gourds and started sawing them.

“톱질하세, 톱질하세, 슬근슬근 톱질하세."
“Let’s saw, let’s saw, let’s saw it slowly.”

그러자 “펑!” 소리가 나며 박이 갈라지더니 쌀이 쏟아져 나왔어요.
Then, the gourd split, making the sound “Bang!” and rice came pouring out.

흥부는 깜짝 놀랐어요.
Heung-bu was startled.

“아니, 이게 웬 쌀이야?”
“Oh, no. What is all this rice?”

흥부 부부는 다른 박을 골라 톱질을 했어요.
The Heung-bu couple picked another gourd and sawed it.

“펑" 소리가 나더니 박 속에서 금은보화가 쏟아져 나왔어요.
After the sound “Bang!”, gold and silver treasure came pouring out from the gourd.

"펑!" 이번에는 으리으리한 기와집이 나왔어요.
“Bang!” This time, a grand tile-roofed house came out.

"펑!" 이번에는 하인들이 나와 흥부에게 인사했어요.
“Bang!” This time, some servants came out and greeted Heung-bu.

그렇게 흥부는 하루아침에 마을에서 가장 큰 부자가 되었어요.
Like that, Heung-bu became the richest person in the village overnight.

흥부의 소식을 전해 들은 놀부가 흥부를 찾아갔어요.
Nol-bu, who heard the news about Heung-bu, went to visit him.

심술이 난 놀부가 자초지종을 묻자 흥부는 놀부에게 지금까지 있었던 일들을 모두 말해 주 었어요.
When grumpy Nol-bu asked about the whole story, Heung-bu told Nol-bu everything that had happened so far.

흥부의 이야기를 들은 놀부는 산으로 올라가 제비를 찾아다녔어요.
Nol-bu listened to Heung-bu’s story and went up to the mountain to look for swallows.

마침 제비를 발견한 놀부는 제비의 다리를 일부러 부러뜨렸어요.
Just in time, Nol-bu found a swallow and broke its leg on purpose.

그러고선 제비의 다리를 치료해 주었어요.
And then, he cured its leg.

“내가 다리를 치료해 주었으니 내년 봄에 꼭 박씨를 물어와야 한다.”
“Since I cured your leg, make sure you bring gourd seeds next spring.”

이듬해 봄이 되자 정말 제비가 놀부에게 박씨를 물어다 주었어요.
The following spring, the swallow really brought gourd seeds to Nol-bu.

놀부는 신이 나서 박씨를 심고 정성껏 길렀어요.
Nol-bu got excited, and planted the gourd seeds and grew them with care.

가을이 되자 놀부네 집 지붕에도 박이 주렁주렁 열렸어요.
As it became fall, the gourds grew in clusters on the roof of Nol-bu’s house, as well.

“이제 내가 세상에서 제일 큰 부자가 될 거야."
“Now, I’m going to be the richest person in the world.”

놀부는 부인과 함께 박을 타기 시작했어요.
Nol-bu started to saw the gourd with his wife.

“톱질하세, 톱질하세, 슬근슬근 톱질하세."
“Let’s saw, let’s saw, let’s saw slowly.”

“펑" 하고 박이 갈라지더니 박 속에서 금은보화는 커녕 무서운 도깨비들이 몰려나왔어요.
The gourd split, making the sound “Bang!”, and instead of gold and silver treasure, scary goblins poured out from the gourd.

도깨비들은 못된 놀부를 혼내 주었어요.
The goblins punished mean Nol-bu.

도깨비들에게 집까지 빼앗긴 놀부는 하루아침에 거지가 되었어요.
Nol-bu, who even had his house taken by the goblins, became a beggar overnight.

놀부의 소식을 들은 착한 흥부는 놀부의 집으로 달려갔어요.
Kind-hearted Heung-bu, who heard the new of Nol-bu, ran to Nol-bu’s house.

거지가 된 놀부를 보고 놀란 흥부는 놀부에게 말했어요.
Heung-bu was surprised to see that Nol-bu had become a beggar and he told him.

“형님, 걱정 마세요. 저희랑 같이 살아요.”
“Brother, don’t worry. Live with us.”

놀부는 진심으로 자신의 잘못을 뉘우치고 흥부에게 사과했어요.
Nol-bu sincerely regretted his wrongdoings, and apologized to Heung-bu.

결국 흥부와 놀부는 오순도순 사이좋게 살았답니다.
In the end, Heung-bu and Nol-bu lived well in peace.
