금도끼 은도끼
The golden axe and the silver axe

옛날 어느 시골 마을에 가난하지만 마음씨 착한 나무꾼이 나무를 하고 있었어요.
Once upon a time, in a village in the countryside, a poor but warm-hearted woodcutter was cutting wood.

그런데 갑자기 손이 미끄러지면서 도끼가 연못에 빠졌어요.
But then, his hands slipped and his axe fell into the pond.

“아이고, 하나밖에 없는 도끼인데... 이제 어쩌나... 흑흑흑"
“Oh my god, it was the only axe I had. What am I going to do?”

하나밖에 없는 도끼를 잃어버린 나무꾼은 서럽게 울었어요.
The woodcutter, who had lost his only axe, cried sadly.

그때였어요.
It was at that moment.

연못 안에서 빛이 나더니 산신령님이 나타나셨어요.
A light shone in the pond and a mountain god appeared.

산신령님은 연못 옆에서 울고 있는 나무꾼에게 물어보셨어요.
The mountain god asked the woodcutter who was crying next to the pond.

“이 도끼가 네 도끼냐?”
“Is this axe yours?”

산신령님의 손에 들린 도끼는 반짝반짝 빛나는 금도끼였어요.
The ax in the mountain god’s hand was a glittering gold axe.

놀란 나무꾼이 도끼를 자세히 살펴보더니 대답했어요.
Surprised, the woodcutter took a close look at the axe and answered.

“그 도끼는 제 도끼가 아닙니다.”
“That is not my axe.”

“그럼 이 도끼가 네 도끼냐?
“Then, is this axe yours?”

이번에는 번쩍번쩍 윤이 나는 은도끼를 가리키며 나무꾼에게 물어보셨어요.
This time, the mountain god asked the woodcutter, pointing at a shiny silver axe.

“그것도 제 도끼가 아닙니다. 제 도끼는 낡은 쇠도끼입니다.”
“That is also not mine. My axe is an old steel axe.”

그러자 산신령님은 “허허" 웃으며 말씀하셨어요.
And the mountain god laughed “Haha” and said,

“너는 참으로 정직한 나무꾼이로구나. 내가 이 도끼를 상으로 모두 줄 테니 앞으로도 착하 게 살아라.”
“You are a very honest woodcutter. I will give you all these axes, so keep up the good attitude.”

그렇게 정직한 나무꾼은 금도끼와 은도끼, 자신의 낡은 쇠도끼까지 모두 받았어요.
So, the honest woodcutter received all the axes, including the gold one, the silver one, and his own old steel axe.

이 소식을 전해 들은 이웃집에 사는 욕심쟁이 나무꾼은 당장 그 연못으로 달려갔어요.
His neighbor, a greedy woodcutter, who had heard about news, ran to the pond right away.

욕심쟁이 나무꾼은 자신의 낡은 쇠도끼를 연못으로 힘차게 던졌어요.
The greedy woodcutter threw his old steel axe with full force into the pond.

그러자, 연못에서 빛이 나더니 산신령님이 또 나타나셨어요.
And then, a light shone from the pond, and the mountain god appeared again.

산신령님은 욕심쟁이 나무꾼에게 똑같이 물어보셨어요.
The mountain god asked the greedy woodcutter the same question.

“이 금도끼가 네 도끼냐?”
“Is this gold axe yours?”

“네. 맞습니다. 그 도끼가 바로 제 도끼입니다.”
“Yes. That’s right. That is exactly my axe.”

그러자 산신령님이 이번에는 은도끼를 꺼내 드셨어요.
Then, the mountain god pulled the silver axe out this time.

“이 도끼도 네 도끼냐?”
“Is this axe yours too?”

“네. 네. 그 도끼도 제 도끼입니다. 제가 나무를 하다 실수로 빠뜨렸습니다.”
“Yes. Yes. That is also my axe. I accidently dropped it while I was cutting wood.”

욕심이 많은 욕심쟁이 나무꾼은 금도끼와 은도끼를 모두 가져갈 생각에 들떠 있었어요.
The greedy woodcutter was excited at the thought of taking both the gold axe and the silver one.

그러자 그때, 산신령님이 크게 화가 나 소리치셨어요.
But then, the mountain god shouted with rage.

“이 못된 녀석! 감히 내게 거짓말을 하다니! 너 같은 욕심쟁이에게는 도끼를 하나도 줄 수 없다!”
“You cunning man! How dare you tell a lie to me! I can’t give any axe to a greedy person like you!”

산신령님은 모두 알고 계셨어요.
The mountain god knew everything.

거짓말을 해 남의 도끼를 탐냈던 욕심쟁이 나무꾼은 결국 자신의 도끼마저 잃고 집으로 돌아갔답니다.
In the end, the greedy woodcutter, who wanted to get other people’s axes by lying, went back home after even losing his own axe.
