The old man with a lump

옛날 어느 마을에 턱 밑에 큰 혹이 달린 착한 혹부리 영감님이 살았어요.
Once upon a time, there lived a kind old man who had a big lump under his chin.

영감님은 가난했지만 마음씨가 착하고 노래를 잘 불렀어요.
The old man was poor but he was kind-hearted and good at singing.

하루는 착한 혹부리 영감님이 산에 나무를 하러 갔어요.
One day, the kind old man with a lump went to the mountain to cut wood.

영감님이 열심히 나무를 하다 보니 날이 금세 어두워졌어요.
While he was hard at work, it quickly got dark.

그런데 갑자기 빗방울이 떨어지기 시작했어요.
Then, suddenly, raindrops started falling.

착한 혹부리 영감님은 어디 쉬어 갈 곳이 없는지 주위를 둘러보았어요.
The kind old man with a lump looked around to see if there were some places
where he could rest.

그때, 저 멀리 집 한 채가 보였어요.
Just then, he saw a house in the distance.

가까이 다가가 보니 아무도 살지 않는 허름한 집이었어요.
He came closer to look, and it was a shabby house where nobody lived.

착한 혹부리 영감님은 하룻밤 자고 가야겠다고 생각하고 그 집으로 들어갔어요.
The kind old man with a lump thought that he should stay there for the night,
and he went into the house.

그런데 아무도 없는 집에서 혼자 자려고 하니 무서운 생각이 들어 잠이 오질 않았어요.
But now that he was trying to sleep in the house where there was no one, he had
scary thoughts and couldn’t sleep.

그래서 착한 혹부리 영감님은 노래를 부르기 시작했어요.
So, the kind old man with a lump started to sing.

그러자 그때, 문이 벌컥 열리더니 도깨비들이 집 안으로 들어왔어요.
And then, the door burst open and goblins came in the house.

“영감, 노랫소리 한번 듣기 좋소.”
“Old man, your singing voice sounds good.”

도깨비들은 영감님에게 어떻게 하면 노래를 잘 부르는지 물었어요.
The goblins asked the old man how to sing well.

착한 혹부리 영감님은 도깨비들이 무서워 온몸을 벌벌 떨었지만 능청스럽게 혹을 만지며
말했어요.
The kind old man with a lump was scared and his whole body was trembling, but
he said, while touching his lump and acting naturally.

“내 노랫소리야 이 혹에서 나오지요.”
“Of course my singing voice comes out from this lump.”

“그럼 그 혹이 바로 노래 주머니란 말이지?”
“Then, you’re saying that your lump is your song pocket, right?”

그러자 한 도깨비가 도깨비 방망이로 영감님의 혹을 툭 쳐서 떼어 냈어요.
Then, one of the goblins hit the old man’s lump with his bat and took it off.

“이 노래 주머니는 우리가 가져가겠소. 대신 이 금은보화를 주겠소.”
“We will take this song pocket. Instead, we will give you gold and jewels.”

도깨비들이 방망이로 바닥을 ‘툭' 하고 내려치니 온갖 금은보화들이 나타났어요.
Goblins struck the floor with their bat, and shortly, all kinds of treasures
appeared.

그렇게 착한 혹부리 영감님은 혹도 떼고 금은보화도 얻어 큰 부자가 되었어요.
So, the kind old man with a lump had his lump removed and became a really rich
person.

한편, 이 소식을 들은 이웃 마을의 욕심쟁이 혹부리 영감이 착한 혹부리 영감을 찾아갔어
요.
Meanwhile, a greedy old man with a lump living in the neighboring village heard
the news and went to visit the kind old man.

착한 혹부리 영감은 그동안에 있었던 일을 모두 말해 주었어요.
The kind old man told him everything that had happened so far.

욕심쟁이 혹부리 영감은 당장 도깨비가 나오는 집을 찾아갔어요.
The greedy old man with a lump went to the house right away where goblins
appear.

날이 저물자 욕심쟁이 혹부리 영감이 노래를 부르기 시작했어요.
When it got dark, the greedy old man started to sing.

그때, 밖에서 노랫소리를 들은 도깨비들이 씩씩거리며 방으로 들어왔어요.
Then, the goblins that heard his singing voice outside came into the room in a
huff.

도깨비를 본 욕심쟁이 혹부리 영감이 말했어요.
The greedy old man saw the goblins and said,

“내 노랫소리 어떤가? 이 혹에서 나오는 거라네.”
“How is my singing voice? It is coming from this lump.”

“뭐? 노래 주머니라고? 거짓말쟁이 영감! 지난번에 준 혹도 가짜더니, 어딜 속이려고! 이
혹도 마저 가져가시오!”
“What? A song pocket? Liar! The one that you gave me last time was also a fake
one. Who do you think you are trying to deceive? Here! Take this lump too!”

도깨비들은 혹부리 할아버지의 턱에 혹을 하나 더 붙여 주었어요.
The goblins attached one more lump on the old man’s chin.

그렇게 욕심만 잔뜩 부리던 욕심쟁이 혹부리 할아버지는 혹 떼러 갔다가 혹이 하나 더 늘
어서 돌아왔답니다.
So, the greedy old man with a lump, who would be greedy, went to get his lump
removed but came back with one more.
