Kongjwi and Patjwi

옛날 어느 마을에 콩쥐라는 착한 여자 아이가 아버지와 함께 살고 있었어요.
Once upon a time in a village, there was a kind-hearted girl called Kong-jwi living with her father.

콩쥐 아버지는 엄마 없이 자란 콩쥐가 안타까워 새엄마를 맞이했어요.
Kong-jwi’s father felt pity for Kong-jwi for having grown up without a mom, so he got her a stepmother.

새엄마는 팥쥐라는 딸을 데리고 들어왔어요.
The stepmother brought her daughter, who was called “Pat-jwi.”

그런데 안타깝게도 새엄마가 들어오고 얼마 지나지 않아 콩쥐 아버지가 그만 세상을 떠나고 말았어요.
But, unfortunately, not long after the stepmother came in, Kong-jwi’s father ended up passing away.

아버지가 돌아가시자 새엄마는 팥쥐만 예뻐했어요.
Once the father passed away, the stepmother only favored Pat-jwi.

콩쥐에게는 힘든 집안일을 모두 시켰어요.
She made Kong-jwi do the all the hard house chores.

“그 나무 호미로 이 자갈밭을 모두 갈아 놓도록 해. 저녁 때까지 갈지 못하면 저녁밥은 없다.”
“Plow this gravelly field with that wooden hoe. If you don’t finish it by evening, there’s no dinner for you.”

콩쥐는 열심히 일을 했지만, 자갈밭을 갈기에는 너무 약한 나무 호미가 곧 부러져 버렸어요.
Kong-jwi worked hard, but the hoe, which was too weak to plow the gravelly field, broke soon.

‘어떡하지. 호미가 부러져 버렸어... 오늘도 저녁밥을 먹지 못 할거야... 흑흑...’
‘What should I do? The hoe is broken. I can’t have dinner today either. [sobbing].”

그때, 울고 있는 콩쥐 앞에 황소 한 마리가 나타났어요.
And then, a bull appeared in front of crying Kong-jwi.

“착한 콩쥐 아가씨, 걱정 말아요. 제가 밭을 갈아 드릴게요."
“Kind-hearted Kong-jwi, don’t worry. I will plow the gravelly field for you.”

황소가 눈 깜짝할 사이에 밭을 모두 갈았어요.
The bull plowed all of the gravelly field in an instant.

며칠 뒤, 새엄마와 팥쥐는 마을 잔치에 놀러 가며 콩쥐에게 말했어요.
A few days later, the stepmother and Pat-jwi said to Kong-jwi on their way to a party in the town.

“너는 항아리에 물을 가득 채우고 벼도 찧고, 베도 다 짜 놓고 잔치에 오너라.”
“You can come to the party after you fill up the pot with water, pound the rice, and weave all the cloth.”

하지만 항아리 바닥에는 큰 구멍이 나 있었어요.
But, there was a big hole at the bottom of the pot.

‘항아리에 구멍이 있는데 어떻게 물을 가득 채우지...’
‘How should I fill up the pot with water when it has a hole?’

바로 그때, 어딘가에서 두꺼비가 나타났어요.
Just then, a toad appeared from somewhere.

“아가씨. 제가 항아리 안에 들어가 구멍을 막고 있을 테니 물을 채우세요.”
“Young lady, I will go inside and block the hole, so you fill water into it.”

항아리에 물을 모두 채운 콩쥐가 벼를 찧기 시작했어요.
After filling up the pot with water, Kong-jwi started to pound the rice.

그러자 참새들이 나타나서 말했어요.
And then, sparrows appeared and said,

“콩쥐 아가씨, 우리가 벼를 모두 찧어 드릴게요.”
“Miss Kong-jwi, we will pound all the rice for you.”

참새들이 벼를 찧기 시작하자 이번에는 하늘에서 선녀님이 내려와 콩쥐에게 말했어요.
Soon after the sparrows started pounding the rice, a fairy came down from the sky and said to Kong-jwi,

“콩쥐야, 내가 베를 짜 줄테니 너는 이 예쁜 신발을 신고 잔치에 가거라."
“Kong-jwi, I will weave the cloth for you. So you go to the party wearing these pretty shoes.”

“고맙습니다, 선녀님! 고마워, 두껍아, 참새들아!”
“Thank you, Fairy! Thank you, toad and sparrows!”

콩쥐는 선녀님이 준 예쁜 신발을 신고 서둘러 잔치에 달려갔어요.
Kong-jwi put on the pretty shoes that the fairy gave her, and ran to the party in a hurry.

그런데 급하게 뛰어가던 콩쥐는 그만 강물에 신발 한 짝을 빠뜨리고 말았어요.
But, Kong-jwi, who was running in a hurry, dropped one of her shoes in the river.

그런데 그때, 그곳을 지나가던 원님이 콩쥐의 모습을 보았어요.
And then, the county magistrate, who was passing by, saw Kong-jwi.

원님은 콩쥐를 보고 한눈에 반했어요.
He saw Kong-jwi and fell in love at first sight.

그러고는 강물에 떠 있는 콩쥐의 신발을 가리키며 말했어요.
Then, he pointed at Kong-jwi’s shoe floating on the river and said,

“저 신발의 주인을 내 아내로 맞이할 것이다.”
“I will take the owner of that shoe as my wife.”

원님이 강물에 떠 있던 신발의 주인을 찾아서 아내로 맞이할 것이라는 소식이 퍼졌어요.
The news spread that the county magistrate was looking for the owner of the shoe that was floating on the river to take her as his wife.

그리고 수많은 여인들이 원님의 아내가 되고 싶어 했어요.
And a lot of women wanted to become the wife of the county magistrate.

그날 잔치에 갔던 모든 여인들이 그 신발을 신어 보았지만, 신발이 발에 맞는 사람은 없었어요.
All the women who went to the party that day tried the shoe, but there was nobody that the shoe fit.

물론 팥쥐도 신어 보았어요.
Of course Pat-jwi tried it on too.

하지만 그 신발은 팥쥐에게도 맞지 않았어요.
But, the shoe didn’t fit Pat-jwi’s foot, either.

그때, 콩쥐가 수줍게 나와 말했어요.
At that moment, Kong-jwi came out in a shy manner and said,

“제가 한번 신어 봐도 될까요?”
“Can I try putting it on?”

콩쥐가 그 신발을 신으니 발에 꼭 맞았어요.
Kong-jwi tried the shoe and it fit her foot perfectly.

이것을 보고 원님이 콩쥐에게 말했어요.
Seeing this, the country magistrate said to Kong-jwi,

“그때 낭자의 모습을 보고 한눈에 반했다오. 나와 결혼해 주시겠소?”
“When I saw you then, I fell in love with you at first sight. Will you marry me?”

그 후, 콩쥐와 원님은 결혼하여 행복하게 살았답니다.
After that, Kong-jwi and the country magistrate got married and lived happily ever after.
