요술 맷돌
The magic millstone

옛날 옛날 아주 먼 옛날에 한 임금님이 살고 있었어요.
Once upon a time, there lived a king.

임금님은 요술 맷돌을 가지고 있었어요.
The king had a magic millstone.

이 요술 맷돌은 무엇이든 만들어 낼 수 있었어요.
This millstone could make anything.

맷돌을 돌리면서 “나와라, 밥!" 하고 외치면 밥이 나오고, “그쳐라, 밥!" 하면 뚝 그치는 신 기한 요술 맷돌이었어요.
It was an amazing millstone that would make food if you shouted “Come out, food!” while turning it, and would stop if you said “Stop, food!.”

사람들은 모두 임금님의 요술 맷돌을 부러워했어요.
Everybody was jealous of the king’s millstone.

그러던 어느 날, 요술 맷돌 소식을 들은 옆 나라의 도둑이 궁궐 벽을 넘어 들어와 임금님의 요술 맷돌을 훔쳤어요.
And then one day, a thief in a neighboring country, who heard the news about the millstone, climbed over the palace wall and came in, and stole the king’s magic millstone.

도둑은 요술 맷돌을 훔쳐 아주 멀리 달아나야겠다고 생각했어요.
The thief thought that he would steal the magic millstone and flee far away.

그래서 바다를 건너기 위해 배를 탔어요.
So, he got on a boat to cross the sea.

도둑은 요술 맷돌로 부자가 될 생각에 아주 행복해졌어요.
The thief got very happy at the thought of becoming a rich man using the magic millstone.

도둑은 요술 맷돌에서 소금이 많이 나온다면 자신이 부자가 될 수 있을 거라 생각했어요.
The thief thought that he could become rich if a lot of salt came out of the magic millstone.

그래서 도둑은 맷돌을 돌리면서 소리쳤어요.
So, the thief shouted while turning the millstone.

“나와라, 소금!”
“Come out, salt!”

그러자 맷돌에서 하얀 소금이 마구 쏟아져 나왔어요.
And then, white salt poured out of the millstone.

쌓여 가는 소금을 보고 도둑은 너무 기뻤어요.
Looking at the salt piling up, the thief was very happy.

“이제 나도 부자다!”
“Now I’m rich, too!”

욕심이 많은 도둑은 맷돌을 더 힘차게 돌리며 “나와라, 소금!”을 계속 외쳤어요.
The greedy thief kept shouting “Come out, salt!”, turning the millstone more powerfully.

그러자 맷돌에서 더 빠르게 소금이 쏟아져 나오기 시작했어요.
And then, from the millstone, salt started to pour out faster.

도둑의 욕심만큼 배 안에 소금이 산더미처럼 쌓여 갔어요.
Salt was piling up like a mountain as big as the thief’s greed.

그때, 소금의 무게를 견디지 못하고 배가 기우뚱거리기 시작했어요.
And then, the boat couldn’t bear the weight of the salt and started to shake.

도둑은 당황하기 시작했어요.
The thief started to panic.

“어, 큰일이다. 배가 기울고 있어!”
“Oh, no. The boat is tilting!”

점점 배가 가라앉자 도둑은 너무 당황해서 요술 맷돌을 멈추는 주문을 잊어버렸어요.
As the boat started to sink, the thief, in panic, forgot the spell to stop the millstone.

결국 도둑은 “그쳐라, 소금!”이라는 말을 끝내 못 하고 배와 함께 가라앉았어요.
In the end, the thief ended up not being able to say “Stop, salt!” and sunk with the boat.

그래서 맷돌은 여전히 바닷속에서 쉬지 않고 돌며 소금을 만들어 내고 있어요.
So, the millstone is still turning under the sea and making salt.

바닷물이 짠 이유가 바로 이 소금이 나오는 요술 맷돌 때문이래요.
They say that the reason why the seawater is salty is none other than the magic millstone that makes salt.
