의좋은 형제
Loyal brothers

옛날 어느 마을에 의좋은 형제가 살고 있었어요.
Once upon a time, in a village, there lived two brothers who were on good terms.

어느덧 시간이 흘렀고, 형은 결혼을 해서 예쁜 두 아이를 낳았어요.
Time passed and the older brother got married and gave birth to two pretty children.

그리고 시간이 더 흘러서, 동생도 마음씨 착한 신부와 결혼을 했어요.
And more time passed, the younger brother also got married to a kind-hearted bride.

형제는 부모님이 물려주신 논에서 함께 농사를 지으며 살았어요.
The brothers lived while farming together on the rice paddy that their parents had passed on to them.

가을이 되자 형제가 부지런히 일한 덕분에 풍년이 들었어요.
When it became fall, they had a year of good crops thanks to their hard work.

“형님, 이 정도면 모두가 걱정 없이 배불리 먹을 수 있겠어요.”
“Brother, with this amount, we will all be able to eat enough without worrying.”

형제는 아주 행복했어요.
The brothers were very happy.

추수를 마치니 쌀이 12가마니가 나왔어요.
The harvest was over, and they had 12 straw bags of rice.

형제는 쌀을 똑같이 여섯 가마니씩 나눠 집으로 돌아갔어요.
The brothers split them up evenly into 6 straw bags each and went back to their houses.

하지만 그날 밤, 형은 잠을 제대로 이루지 못했어요.
But that night, the older brother couldn’t sleep.

동생 걱정이 되었기 때문이에요.
Because he was worried about his younger brother.

형은 부인에게 말했어요.
The older brother said to his wife.

“여보, 동생네는 얼마 전에 결혼을 하였으니 우리보다 필요한 것이 많지 않겠소?”
“Honey, since my younger brother got married not long ago, don’t you think they need more stuff than we do?”

“네, 맞아요. 우리는 네 식구니 쌀 네 가마니면 충분해요.”
“Yes, you are right. Since we are four people, four bags of rice will be enough.”

착한 형의 부인이 두 가마니를 동생네 가져다주고 오라고 했어요.
The kind-hearted wife of the older brother told him to go and give two bags of rice to his younger brother.

한편, 동생도 잠을 이루지 못하고 아내에게 말했어요.
Meanwhile, the younger brother also couldn’t sleep and told his wife.

“여보, 형님네는 식구가 넷이나 되니 우리보다 쌀이 더 필요하지 않겠어요?”
“Honey, since my brother’s family is four people, don’t you think they need more rice than we do?”

“그래요. 우린 아직 자식이 없으니 두 가마니를 더 드리고 오세요.”
“Yes. Since we don’t have children yet, go and give him two more bags of rice.”

두 형제는 각각 쌀 두 가마니를 수레에 싣고 서로의 집 마당에 가져다 놓았어요.
The two brothers each loaded up two bags of rice on their carts and took them to each other’s front yard.

그런데 다음 날 아침, 형제는 각자 자신의 집 마당에 여전히 쌀이 여섯 가마니가 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐어요.
But the next morning, the brothers were surprised to see that there were 6 bags of rice still in their front yards.

‘이상하네. 분명 쌀 두 가마니를 가져다 놓았는데 왜 그대로지?’
‘That’s strange. I definitely took two bags of rice over there. Why is it still the same?’

그날 밤, 형제는 다시 쌀 두 가마니를 수레에 싣고 옮기기 시작했어요.
That night, the brothers loaded up two bags of rice on their carts again and started to move them.

수레를 끌고 서로의 집으로 향하고 있던 그때, 형제는 똑같이 쌀 가마니를 옮기고 있는 서 로를 발견했어요.
Right when they were pulling their carts heading to each other’s houses, the brothers found each other moving the straw bags of rice.

그제서야 형제는 쌀 가마니가 줄어들지 않은 이유를 알게 되었답니다.
Only then did the brothers know the reason why the number of straw bags didn’t decrease.

“형님, 고맙습니다.”
“Older brother, thank you.”

“아우야, 고맙다.”
“Younger brother, thank you.

의좋은 형제는 그 후로도 서로 도우며 행복하게 살았답니다.
The brothers, who were on good terms, lived happily ever after, helping each other.
