호랑이와 곶감
The tiger and a dried persimmon

흰 눈이 내리는 어느 겨울날, 배고픈 호랑이 한 마리가 어슬렁어슬렁 마을로 내려왔어요.
On a snowy winter day, a hungry tiger slowly came down to the village.

“아, 배고파. 어디 뭐 먹을 것 없나?”
“Ah, I’m hungry, Is there anything to eat?”

그때 어디선가 아기 울음 소리가 들려왔어요.
And then, from somewhere, the sound of a baby crying was heard.

“응애! 응애!”
(Baby’s cry)

호랑이는 소리가 나는 집으로 다가갔어요.
The tiger approached the house where the sound was coming from.

“아가, 울지 마. 계속 울면 도깨비가 와서 잡아갈 거야!”
“Baby, don’t cry. If you keep crying, a goblin will come and get you!”

그래도 아기는 더 크게 “으앙!” 하고 울었어요.
Even then, the baby cried louder.

“아가, 뚝! 지금 밖에 무서운 호랑이가 와 있어. 뚝 안 그치면 호랑이가 와서 잡아간다.”
“Baby, stop crying! There is a scary tiger outside. If you don’t stop crying, the tiger will come and take you.”

‘아니, 내가 온 걸 어떻게 알았지?’ 호랑이는 생각했어요.
‘How did she know I’m here?’ The tiger thought.

그래도 아기는 울음을 그치지 않았어요.
But the baby still didn’t stop crying.

‘저 녀석은 나를 안 무서워하네’
‘That kid is not scared of me.’

아기가 그래도 울음을 그치지 않자 엄마가 아기에게 말했어요.
Since the baby still didn’t stop crying, mom said to the baby.

“아가. 여기 곶감이다, 곶감.”
“Baby. Here is a dried persimmon.”

그 말에 아기는 울음을 뚝 그쳤어요.
Hearing that, the baby stopped crying right away.

곶감이라는 말에 아기가 울음을 뚝 그치자 호랑이는 깜짝 놀랐어요.
The tiger was surprised that the baby stopped crying at hearing the words “dried persimmon.”

“곶감이라는 놈이 누구길래 울음을 뚝 그치지? 나보다 더 무서운 놈이구나.”
“Who is this dried persimmon guy to make the baby stop crying? He must be scarier than me.”

그런데 그때 문이 '삐걱' 하고 열리자, 호랑이는 깜짝 놀라 외양간 안으로 도망갔어요.
But then, as the door opened and made a creaking sound, the tiger was surprised and ran away into the barn.

얼마 후, 시커먼 그림자 하나가 외양간으로 살금살금 들어왔어요.
A while later, a dark shadow came into the barn quietly.

‘저게 곶감인가 보다.’ 호랑이는 생각했어요.
‘That must be a dried persimmon.’ The tiger thought.

호랑이가 곶감이라 생각한 그림자는 사실 소를 훔치러 외양간으로 들어온 소도둑이었어요.
The shadow that the tiger thought was a dried persimmon was actually a cow thief who came into the barn to steal a cow.

호랑이는 그것도 모르고 너무 무서워 벌벌 떨며 소 옆에 몸을 바짝 엎드려 숨겼어요.
The tiger, who didn’t know that, hid itself by lying flat on its face next to a cow, trembling with fear.

천천히 다가온 소도둑이 호랑이의 머리를 더듬었어요.
The cow thief approached slowly, and fumbled around the tiger’s head.

호랑이는 깜짝 놀라 벌떡 일어났어요.
The tiger was startled and stood up with a jump.

덩달아 깜짝 놀란 소도둑이 호랑이의 등에 올라탔어요.
The cow thief was also surprised, and hopped onto the tiger’s back.

호랑이는 곶감이란 괴물이 등에 탄 줄 알고 있는 힘을 다해 뛰었어요.
The tiger thought that the monster called a dried persimmon was on its back, so he ran away as fast as he could.

소도둑은 호랑이 등에 힘껏 매달렸어요.
The cow thief hung tight onto the tiger’s back.

환한 달빛 아래로 나오자 소도둑은 자신이 타고 있는 게 소가 아니라 호랑이였다는 것을 깨달았어요.
As they came outside under the bright moonlight, the cow thief realized that what he was riding was not a cow but a tiger.

소도둑은 너무 무서워 벌벌 떨며 호랑이 등을 꽉 붙잡고 있다가 커다란 나무의 나뭇가지에 휙 뛰어 매달렸어요.
The cow thief was holding tightly onto the tiger’s back while trembling with fear, and jumped to hang onto a branch of a big tree.

‘휴우. 하마터면 호랑이의 밥이 될 뻔했네.’ 소도둑은 생각했어요.
‘Sigh. I almost became food for the tiger.’ The cow thief thought.

소도둑이 등에서 떨어지자 호랑이는 곶감을 피해 더 빨리 뛰어 달아났어요.
When the cow thief got off its back, the tiger ran away faster to escape from the dried persimmon.

호랑이는 생각했어요.
The tiger thought,

‘휴우. 하마터면 곶감한테 잡아 먹힐 뻔했네.’
‘Sigh, I almost got eaten by the dried persimmon.’
