임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀
King’s ears are donkey ears

옛날, 어느 나라에 한 임금님이 있었어요.
Once upon a time, there lived a king in a country.

이 임금님에게는 비밀이 하나 있었어요.
The king had a secret.

비밀은 바로 임금님의 귀였어요.
The secret was none other than the king’s ears.

임금님의 귀는 당나귀 귀처럼 크고 길었어요.
The king’s ears were big and long like donkey ears.

하지만 임금님이 항상 큰 왕관으로 귀를 가리고 다녔기 때문에 아무도 임금님의 비밀을 몰 랐어요.
But, since the king always covered his ears with a big crown, no one knew the king’s secret.

하지만 딱 한 사람, 임금님의 이발사만이 그 비밀을 알고 있었어요.
But just one person, the king’s barber, knew the secret.

“내 귀에 대해서 아무에게도 말하면 안 되네."
“Do not say a word about my ears to anyone.”

“예. 물론입니다. 임금님.”
“Yes, of course. Your highness.”

이발사는 임금님의 귀가 당나귀 귀 같다는 말을 하고 싶었지만 꾹 참았어요.
The barber wanted to tell people that the king’s ears looked like donkey’s ears, but he held back the urge to do so.

이발사는 누구에게도 그 비밀을 말하지 못해서 답답해하다가 병이 들고 말았어요.
The barber felt frustrated because he couldn’t tell the secret to anyone, and ended up getting a disease.

병이 점점 깊어지자 이발사는 죽기 전에 임금님의 비밀을 말하고 싶었어요.
As his disease became more and more serious, the barber wanted to tell the king’s secret before he died.

이발사는 성문 밖의 대나무 숲으로 갔어요.
The barber went to a bamboo grove outside of the castle gate.

아무도 없는 대나무 숲에서 이발사는 큰 소리로 외쳤어요.
In the bamboo grove where nobody was around, the barber shouted out loud.

“임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀! 임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀!”
“The king’s ears are donkey’s ears! The king’s ears are donkey’s ears!”

큰 소리로 외치고 나니 속이 후련해졌어요.
Once he shouted it out loud, he felt much better.

하지만 얼마 지나지 않아 이발사는 병으로 죽었어요.
But not long after that, the barber died from the disease.

그런데, 이상한 일이 일어나기 시작했어요.
Then, strange things started to happen.

대나무 숲에 바람이 불면 “임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀" 소리가 들리게 된 거예요.
Whenever wind blew in the bamboo grove, the sound “The king’s ears are donkey’s ears” would be heard.

“임금님 귀가 당나귀 귀라니 이게 무슨 소리야?”
“The king’s ears are donkey’s ears? What does that mean?”

“그래서 임금님이 그렇게 큰 왕관을 쓰시나 봐요.”
“I guess that’s why the king wears that big crown.”

백성들 사이에서 소문이 빠르게 퍼졌어요.
The rumor spread rapidly among the people.

임금님은 잔뜩 화가 났어요.
The king got very angry.

임금님은 신하에게 대나무를 모두 베어 버리라고 명령했어요.
The king ordered his retainers to cut down all the bamboo trees.

대나무들이 모두 베어져 대나무 숲은 말라 버렸어요.
All the bamboo trees were cut, so the bamboo grove ended up running dry.

하지만 곧 말라 버린 대나무 숲에 새싹이 돋고 다시 전처럼 대나무가 우거지게 되었어요.
But soon, in the dried bamboo grove, new sprouts shot up and it was thick with bamboo trees once again like before.

그런데 바람이 불기 시작하자 또다시 똑같은 소리가 들리기 시작했어요.
But as wind started to blow, the same sound started to be heard again.

“임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀!”
“The king’s ears are donkey’s ears!”

대나무 숲에서 그 소리가 또 들린다는 소식을 듣고 임금님은 병이 나고 말았어요.
After hearing the news that they could hear the sound in the bamboo grove again, the king became ill.

그런데 그날 밤, 임금님은 꿈을 꾸었어요.
But then that night, the king had a dream.

꿈에서 하늘 나라에 간 임금님은 신령님을 만났어요.
In his dream, the king went to the heaven and met a god.

“너의 큰 귀로 백성들의 소리에 귀 기울여 어진 임금이 되거라.”
“Be a benevolent king that listens to the people with your big ears.”

잠에서 깨어난 임금님은 깊은 깨달음을 얻었어요.
The king woke up and found enlightenment.

다음 날, 임금님은 큰 왕관을 벗어 놓고 자신의 귀를 내놓았어요.
The next day, the king took off his big crown and put his ears out.

그 후로 임금님은 누구보다 백성들의 말에 잘 귀 기울이는 어진 임금이 되었답니다.
After that, the king became a benevolent king that listened to the people better than anyone.

Descriptive verb stem + -아/어/여지다
= “To become + adjective”

Verb stem ending in vowels ‘ㅏ' or ‘ㅗ' + -아지다
