두 나그네와 곰
Two Travelers and a Bear

어느 날 두 나그네가 산길을 걸어가고 있었어요.
One day, two travelers were walking down a path in the mountain.

두 나그네는 아주 친한 친구들이었어요.
The two travelers were very close friends.

두 사람은 재미있게 이야기를 하면서 산길을 걸어갔어요.
The two people were enjoying talking to each other while walking down the mountain path.

그런데 갑자기 곰이 나타났어요.
But suddenly, a bear appeared.

“곰이다, 곰이야. 빨리 도망가.”
“Bear! Bear! Run away quickly.”

두 사람은 깜짝 놀라서 도망을 쳤어요.
Startled, the two people ran away.

그런데 그 산길에서는 도망갈 곳이 많지 않았어요.
But on that mountain path, there were not many places where they could run away.

둘 중 한 명이 나무 한 그루를 발견하고는 재빠르게 나무 위로 올라갔어요.
One of the two found a tree and quickly went up the tree.

나무를 늦게 발견한 나머지 한 명은 도망갈 곳이 전혀 없었어요.
The other person who found the tree late had nowhere to run away.

그때 그 사람은 예전에 들었던 말이 떠올랐어요.
And then something he had heard before came to his mind.

‘곰은 죽은 동물은 먹지 않는다고 했지. 죽은 척을 해야겠다.’
‘They said bears don’t eat dead animals. I’m going to pretend to be dead.’

그 사람은 산길에 누워 죽은 척을 하기 시작했어요.
The person lay down on the mountain path and started pretending to be dead.

숨을 꾹 참고 누워서 움직이지 않았어요.
He held his breath, lay there and didn’t move.

곰은 그 사람에게 다가가 코를 대고 킁킁 냄새를 맡았어요.
The bear approached the man and put his nose on him and sniffed.

그리고는 팔과 다리를 툭툭 건드려 보았어요.
And then nudged his arms and legs.

그렇지만 그 사람은 죽은 사람처럼 전혀 움직이지 않았어요.
But the person didn’t move at all like a dead person.

곰은 결국 다른 쪽으로 가 버렸어요.
The bear went somewhere else in the end.

곰이 가는 것을 확인하고는 나무 위에 있던 사람이 내려왔어요.
After checking that the bear went away, the man who was on the tree came down.

“아휴, 살았다. 정말 무서웠어. 괜찮아? 그런데 곰이 자네에게 뭐라고 말하는 거 같던데, 뭐라고 말하던가?”
“Oh my god. We are alive? I was so scared. Are you alright? But the bear seemed to say something to you. What did it say?”

누워 있던 사람도 몸에 있는 흙을 털어내며 일어났어요.
The guy who was lying on the ground got up dusting his clothes.

“곰이 이렇게 말하더군. 위험할 때 혼자 도망치는 사람은 친구가 아니니 같이 다니지 말라고.”
“The bear said that a person who runs away by himself in times of danger is not a friend, so don’t hang out with him.

그는 그 말을 하고는 혼자 산길을 내려가 버렸어요.
After saying that, he went down the mountain path by himself.

나무 위로 혼자 도망갔던 사람은 후회를 했답니다.
The person who had run away by himself onto the tree regretted.
 

Grammar point

Verb stem + -아/어/여 버리다

-아/어/여 버리다 can mean “to end up” doing something or “to completely finish” doing something, depending on the context.

Ex)
잃다 (to lose) + -아/어/여 버리다 = 잃어 버렸어요. (I ended up losing it.)
끝내다 (to finish) + -아/어/여 버리다 = 끝내 버렸어요. (I finished it.)
