고양이 목에 방울 달기
Belling The Cat
어느 작은 마을의 작은 집의 한쪽 구석에서 쥐들이 모여서 이야기를 하고 있었어요.
In one corner of a small house in a small village, mice were gathered around and talking.
“우리는 왜 항상 이렇게 숨어 지내야 하는 거야?”
“Why do we always have to live hiding like this?”
“사나운 고양이 때문에 편하게 다닐 수가 없어.”
“We can’t go around comfortably because of the fierce cat.”
“나는 오늘 도망치다가 발을 다쳤어.”
“I hurt my foot while running away today.”
쥐들의 불만은 끝이 없었어요.
The complaints of mice were endless.
그중에 가장 나이가 많은 쥐가 말했어요.
The oldest mouse among them said,
“고양이가 우리에게 다가오기 전에 알 수 있는 방법은 없을까?”
“Is there a way we can know before the cat approaches us?”
가장 나이가 어린 쥐가 말했어요.
The youngest mouse said,
“고양이 목에 방울을 달면 어때요?”
“How about we attach a bell around the cat’s neck?”
쥐들은 모두 좋은 생각이라고 칭찬했어요.
All the mice complimented and said it was a good idea.
“고양이가 움직일 때마다 딸랑딸랑 소리가 나겠지?”
“Every time the cat moves, it will make a tinkling sound, right?”
“고양이가 어디 있는지 알 수 있으니 정말 좋겠다.”
“It will be great since we’ll know where the cat is.”
모두가 기뻐서 상상을 하기 시작했어요.
Everybody was excited and started imagining.
그런데 그때 가장 나이가 많은 쥐가 모두에게 다시 물었어요.
But then the oldest mouse asked everybody again.
“좋은 생각이구나. 그런데 누가 고양이 목에 방울을 달지?”
“That’s a good idea. But who will bell the cat?”
이 말을 들은 쥐들은 모두 조용해졌어요.
Hearing this remark, all the mice became quiet.
아무도 고양이 목에 방울을 달 용기가 없었어요.
Nobody had the courage to attach a bell around the cat’s neck.
Grammar point
Verb stem + -(으)ㄹ 때마다
-(으)ㄹ 때마다 means “every time + subject + verb” and if the verb stem ends with a consonant, you add -을 때마다 after it, and if the verb stem ends with a vowel, you add -ㄹ 때마다.
Ex)
커피를 마시다 (to drink coffee) + -(으)ㄹ 때마다
= 커피를 마실 때마다 (every time I drink coffee)
집에 가다 (to go home) + -(으)ㄹ 때마다
= 집에 갈 때마다 (every time I go home)
책을 읽다 (to read a book) + -(으)ㄹ 때마다
= 책을 읽을 때마다 (every time I read a book)
