양치기 소년
The Shepherd Boy

어느 작은 마을에 양치기 소년이 살았어요.
In a small village, there lived a shepherd boy.

소년은 매일매일 언덕에 올라가 양과 함께 시간을 보냈어요.
The boy went up to the hill every day and spent time together with sheep.

매일 똑같은 일상이었지요.
Every day was the same routine.

그래서 소년은 점점 심심해지기 시작했어요.
So the boy started to get bored little by little.

“하루하루가 매일 똑같아. 양은 말도 못 하니까 정말 심심하다.”
“Every day is the same. Since sheep can’t even speak, it’s so boring.”

소년은 재미있는 일이 없을까 고민을 하기 시작했어요.
The boy started thinking hard about whether there is anything interesting to do.

그러던 어느 날이었어요.
And then one day,

양들과 함께 언덕 위에 있던 양치기 소년은 일을 열심히 하고 있는 마을 사람들을 쳐다보았어요.
the shepherd boy, who was on the hill with his sheep, looked at the village people who were working hard.

‘늑대가 나타났다고 거짓말을 하면 사람들이 언덕 위로 올라올까?’
‘If I lie and say that a wolf has appeared, will they come up to the hill?’

갑자기 궁금해진 소년은 소리를 지르기 시작했어요.
The boy suddenly became curious and started shouting.

“늑대다, 늑대가 나타났다. 늑대가 나타났어요. 도와주세요.”
“Wolf! A wolf has appeared! A wolf has appeared. Please help.”

사람들은 깜짝 놀라서 몽둥이와 농기구를 들고 언덕 위로 뛰어 올라왔어요.
People were surprised and ran up to the hill with sticks and farming tools.

“늑대? 늑대가 어디에 있어?”
“Wolf? Where is the wolf?”

양치기 소년은 너무 재미있었어요.
The shepherd found it so much fun.

“아, 죄송해요. 늑대인 줄 알았는데 늑대가 아니었어요.”
“I’m sorry. I thought it was a wolf but it wasn’t a wolf.”

사람들은 화가 났지만 늑대가 나타나지 않아서 다행이라고 생각하면서 돌아갔어요.
People were angry but went back thinking that it was fortunate that no wolf has appeared.

다음 날이 되었어요.
The next day came around.

심심해진 양치기 소년은 또다시 소리를 지르기 시작했어요.
The shepherd boy got bored and started shouting again.

“늑대다, 늑대가 나타났다. 늑대가 나타났어요. 도와주세요.”
“Wolf! A wolf has appeared. A wolf has appeared. Please help!”

열심히 일을 하던 사람들은 언덕 위로 또다시 뛰어 올라왔어요.
People, who were working hard, came up to the hill once again.

“늑대를 잡자!”
“Let’s catch the wolf!”

그런데 사람들은 늑대가 없는 걸 알고 화가 났어요.
But people were angry after they found that there was no wolf.

“이번에도 거짓말을 한 거야?”
“He lied again this time?”

양치기 소년은 잘못 본 거라고 변명을 했지만 사람들은 믿지 않았어요.
The shepherd boy made an excuse saying that he was mistaken, but people didn’t believe him.

며칠이 지났어요.
A few days passed.

평화로운 언덕 위로 늑대가 어슬렁어슬렁 양들에게 다가왔어요.
Onto the peaceful hill, a wolf slowly approached the sheep.

양치기 소년은 깜짝 놀라 소리를 지르기 시작했어요.
The shepherd boy was surprised and started shouting.

“늑대다, 늑대가 나타났다. 이번에는 진짜 늑대가 나타났어요. 도와주세요.”
“Wolf! A wolf has appeared. This time, a real wolf has appeared. Please help!”

하지만 사람들은 이번에도 거짓말이라고 생각하고 도와주지 않았어요.
But people thought it was a lie again this time and didn’t help.

양치기 소년은 그동안 거짓말한 것을 후회했답니다.
The shepherd boy regretted telling lies before.
 

Grammar point

Verb stem + -았/었/였는데

-았/었/였는데 is used for talking about a past event in connection with something that happened afterward. The -는데 part can be translated to either “but” or “and” depending on the context.

Ex)
사다 (to buy) + -았는데 = 샀는데 (I bought it, but/and)
좋다 (to be good) + -았는데 = 좋았는데 (it was good, but/and)
눕다 (to lie down) + -었는데 = 누웠는데 (I lied down, but/and)
