개미와 베짱이
The Ants and Grasshoppers

어느 따뜻한 봄날이었어요.
It was a warm spring day.

개미들이 모여서 열심히 일을 하고 있었어요.
Ants were gathered together and working hard.

“영차, 영차. 다 같이 열심히 일해서 추운 겨울을 대비하자.”
“Yo-ho, yo-ho! Let’s work hard all together and prepare for the cold winter.”

따뜻한 봄에는 먹을 음식이 많이 있지만 추운 겨울에는 먹을 음식이 없었어요.
In the warm spring, there was a lot of food to eat, but in the cold winter, there was no food to eat.

그래서 개미들은 추운 겨울을 대비해서 음식을 열심히 모았어요.
So the ants diligently gathered food to prepare for the cold winter.

개미들은 아침부터 저녁까지 하루 종일 쉬지 않고 일을 했어요.
The ants worked all day long from morning until evening without resting.

그런데 어디에선가 음악 소리가 들려왔어요.
But then from somewhere, the sound of music was heard.

개미들이 열심히 일하는 곳 옆에서 베짱이들이 기타를 치면서 노래를 부르고 있었어요.
Right next to where the ants were working hard, some grasshoppers were singing while playing the guitar.

하루 종일 맛있는 음식을 먹으며 춤을 추고 기타를 치며 재미있게 놀았어요.
They had fun while eating delicious foods, dancing and playing the guitar all day long.

베짱이는 일만 하는 개미를 놀렸어요.
A grasshopper teased the ants who were doing nothing but working.

“개미야, 날씨가 이렇게 좋은데 너는 왜 일만 해? 나랑 같이 놀자.”
“Hey, ant, the weather is so nice. Why are you only working? Come play with me.”

개미가 말했어요.
An ant said,

“지금은 날씨가 좋지만 겨울에는 추울 거야. 그리고 겨울에는 먹을 음식도 없어져. 지금 모아야 해.”
“The weather is good now, but it will be cold in the winter. And in the winter, there won’t be any food left to eat. We have to gather it now.”

여름, 가을이 지나 추운 겨울이 찾아왔어요.
Summer and Autumn passed and Winter came around.

찬 바람이 쌩쌩 불고 하늘에서는 눈이 왔어요.
Cold wind blow strongly and from the sky, snow fell.

먹을 음식이 하나도 없었어요.
There was no food at all to eat.

베짱이는 너무 춥고 배가 고파서 노래를 부를 수가 없었어요.
The grasshoppers were too cold and hungry to sing.

손이 시려서 기타를 칠 수가 없었어요.
Their hands were freezing, so they couldn’t play the guitar.

“너무 추워. 그리고 너무 배가 고파서 아무것도 할 수가 없어. 하지만 먹을 게 없는 걸.”
“It’s too cold. And I’m so hungry that I can’t do anything. But there is nothing to eat.”

베짱이가 개미를 찾아가서 말을 했어요.
A grasshopper went to visit the ant and said,

“개미야, 나 지금 너무 춥고 배고파. 먹을 것 좀 줄 수 있어?”
“Hey ant, I am really cold and hungry now. Can you give me something to eat?”

개미는 베짱이에게 먹을 것을 나누어 주었어요.
The ant shared some food with the grasshopper.

그리고 개미는 베짱이에게 말했어요.
And the ant said to the grasshopper.

“베짱이야, 내년에는 우리랑 같이 열심히 일을 해서 겨울을 대비하자.”
“Hey grasshopper, next year, let’s work hard together and prepare for the winter.”
 

Grammar point

Verb stem + -아/어/여야 하다

-아/어/여야 하다 is used to express “to have to” or “should”. If the last syllable of the verb stem contains ㅗ or ㅏ, it is followed by -아야 하다. If the last syllable of the verb stem has anything else, it is followed by -어야 한다, with the exception of 하, which is followed by -여야 한다 and often shortened to 해야 한다. Also, -아/어/여야 하다 is interchangeable with -아/어/여야 되다.

Ex)
사다 (to buy) + -아야 하다 = 사야 해요. (I have to buy.)
바꾸다 (to change) + -어야 하다 = 바꿔야 해요. (I have to change it.)
하다 (to do) + -여야 하다 = 하여야 해요 = 해야 해요. (I have to do it.)
