토끼와 거북이
The rabbit and the turtle

거북이가 숲 속을 엉금엉금 기어가고 있었어요.
A turtle was crawling slowly in the forest.

깡총깡총 뛰어오던 토끼가 그 모습을 보고 거북이를 놀리기 시작했어요.
A rabbit, which was hopping along this way, started to tease the turtle after seeing him.

"거북아, 넌 왜 이렇게 느리니? 나처럼 이렇게 깡총깡총 뛰면 너도 빨리 갈 수 있을 거야.”
“Hey, Turtle. Why are you so slow? You will also be able to go fast if you hop like me.”

약이 오른 거북이가 걸음을 멈추고 말했어요.
The turtle, who was annoyed, stopped and said.

"토끼야, 우리 산꼭대기 나무까지 누가 더 빨리 가나 내기하자."
“Rabbit, let’s make a bet on who can get to the tree on top of the mountain faster.”

토끼가 말했어요.
The rabbit said,

“니가 나를 이길 수 있다고 생각하는 거야? 그래, 한번 해 보자. 그 느린 걸음으로 나를 따라올 수나 있겠어?”
“Do you think you can beat me? Okay, let’s give it a try. Can you even follow me at that slow pace?”

토끼와 거북이는 동시에 나무를 향해 출발했어요.
The rabbit and the turtle started toward the tree at the same time.

토끼는 깡총깡총 뛰어서 순식간에 사라졌어요.
The rabbit hopped and disappeared in an instant.

거북이도 열심히 엉금엉금 기어갔어요.
The turtle also crawled very hard.

토끼는 벌써 산의 중턱까지 도착했어요.
The rabbit already arrived half way up the mountain.

토끼는 뒤를 돌아봤어요.
The rabbit looked behind.

"거북이가 날 따라오려면 아직도 멀었네. 한숨 자고 일어나도 내가 이길 수 있겠다. 잠이나 자야지."
“It’s a long way before the turtle can follow me. I guess I can beat him even if I get some sleep. I’m going to hit the sack.”

하지만 거북이는 쉬지 않고 열심히 산을 올라갔어요.
But the turtle didn’t take a break and went up the mountain diligently.

거북이는 쿨쿨 잠이 든 토끼를 지나 마침내 산꼭대기에 도착했어요.
The turtle passed by the rabbit, who was fast asleep and arrived at the mountaintop at last.

"내가 이겼다. 토끼야, 내가 이겼어!"
“I won. Hey, Rabbit. I won!”

그 소리를 듣고 잠이 깬 토끼는 깜짝 놀라서 산으로 달려갔어요.
The rabbit, who woke up at the sound, ran to the mountain with surprise.

하지만 거북이는 이미 산꼭대기 나무 아래에서 쉬고 있었답니다.
But the turtle was already getting some rest under the tree on the mountaintop.
 

Grammar point

Verb stem + -자
-자 is used to express “Let’s” in Korean. This is in casual form so you may not
used the -자 ending to someone older or in a higher social position than you.

Ex)
가다 (to go) + -자 = 가자. (Let’s go.)
먹다 (to eat) + -자 = 먹자. (Let’s eat.)
보다 (to watch) + -자 = 보자. (Let’s watch.)
만나다 (to meet) + -자 = 만나자. (Let’s meet.)
