황금알을 낳는 거위
The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs
어느 마을에 가난한 농부가 한 명 살고 있었어요.
In one village, a poor farmer was living.
그리고 농부에게는 거위 한 마리가 있었어요.
And the farmer had a goose.
그 거위 한 마리가 농부의 전 재산이었지요.
The one goose was all that the farmer had.
농부는 거위를 정성스럽게 키웠어요.
He grew the goose with elaborate care.
“거위야, 맛있게 먹고 쑥쑥 자라라.”
“Goose, enjoy the food and grow quickly.”
농부는 가난했지만 행복했어요.
The farmer was poor but happy.
그런데 어느 날이었어요.
But then one day,
거위가 낳은 알을 가지러 간 농부는 깜짝 놀랐어요.
the farmer went to pick up the egg that the goose had laid and he was surprised.
“이게 뭐지? 알이 황금색이잖아? 우와, 황금알이잖아!”
“What is this? The egg is of golden color! Wow. It’s a golden egg!”
농부는 시장에 가서 거위가 낳은 황금알을 팔았어요.
The farmer went to the market and sold the golden egg that the goose had laid.
거위는 황금알을 매일 한 개씩 낳았어요.
The goose laid one golden egg each day.
농부는 황금알을 하루에 하나씩 팔아서 결국 부자가 되었어요.
The farmer sold one golden egg each day and eventually became a rich man.
큰 집도 사고 좋은 옷도 샀어요.
He bought a big house and also bought nice clothes.
그런데 부자가 된 농부는 점점 욕심이 나기 시작했어요.
But the farmer, who had become a rich man, was starting to get greedy.
‘황금알을 하루에 한 개씩이 아니라 한꺼번에 여러 개를 가질 수 있으면 정말 좋겠다.’
‘I wish I could have multiple golden eggs at once instead of one a day.’
‘거위 배 속에 있는 황금알을 모두 갖고 싶어.’
‘I want to have all the golden eggs that are in the goose’s belly.’
이렇게 생각하게 된 농부는 거위를 죽여서 거위 배를 열어 보았어요.
The farmer thought like this and killed goose, and opened the goose’s belly.
그렇지만 거위 배 속에는 황금알이 하나도 들어 있지 않았어요.
But inside the goose’s belly, there weren’t any golden eggs.
농부는 자신이 어리석었다는 것을 깨닫고 크게 후회했지만 이미 거위는 죽어 버린 뒤였어요.
The farmer realized that he was foolish and deeply regretted it, but it was after the goose had already died.

= Not +
When you want to explain that something is not A but B, you can say A가 아니라 B.
