농부와 세 아들
The Farmer And The Three Sons

어느 작은 마을에 한 농부가 세 아들과 함께 살고 있었어요.
In a small village, a farmer was living with his three sons.

어느 날 농부가 병이 들어 죽을 때가 가까워졌어요.
One day, the farmer got sick and his death was near.

농부는 세 아들을 불렀어요.
The farmer called his three sons.

“아들들아, 내가 죽을 때가 다 된 거 같구나.”
“My sons, I think it has almost become time that I will die.”

세 아들들은 슬퍼했어요.
The three sons felt sad.

“내가 죽기 전에 알려 줄 것이 있다. 내가 포도밭에 보물을 숨겨 놨단다.”
“There is something I have to tell you before I die. I’ve hidden a treasure in the grape field.”

아들들은 깜짝 놀랐어요.
The sons were surprised.

“아버지, 포도밭 어디에 숨겨 놨는데요?”
“Father, where in the grape field did you hide it?”

농부가 말했어요.
The farmer said,

“그게 기억이 안 나는구나. 너무 오래 전에 숨겨 놔서 어디였는지 기억이 안 나.”
“That, I don’t remember. I hid it such a long time ago that I don’t remember where it was.”

첫째 아들이 말했어요.
The first son said,

“아버지, 그 넓은 포도밭에서 보물을 어떻게 찾죠?”
“Father, how do we find the treasure in that vast grape field?”

농부는 포도밭을 갈아엎다 보면 보물이 나올 거라고 말하고 숨을 거두었어요.
The father said that if they plowed up the grape field, the treasure would be found, and then died.

세 아들은 모두 자신이 먼저 보물을 찾겠다며 포도밭을 갈기 시작했어요.
The sons started plowing the grape field saying that they would all be the first one to find the treasure.

하루가 지나고 또 하루가 지났지만 보물은 나오지 않았어요.
One day passed and another day passed, but the treasure didn’t come out.

“진짜 보물이 있는 걸까?”
“Is there really a treasure?”

둘째 아들이 말했어요.
The second son said.

세 아들은 보물을 다른 형제에게 뺏길까 봐 밭을 열심히 갈면서 보물을 찾았어요.
The three sons looked for the treasure while plowing the field diligently in fear of having it taken by other siblings.

그런데 포도밭 전체를 다 갈았지만 보물은 나오지 않았어요.
But even after plowing the entire grape field, the treasure didn’t come out.

“이게 어떻게 된 일이지? 아버지가 거짓말을 하신 건가?”
“What happened? Did our father lie?”

그런데 시간이 흐르자 포도밭에서는 포도가 탐스럽게 열렸어요.
But as time passed, in the grape field, grapes started hanging deliciously.

세 아들은 그제서야 아버지가 주신 보물이 무엇인지 깨달았어요.
Only then, the three sons realized what the treasure their father had given them was.

“아버지가 말씀하신 보물이 이 포도였구나. 앞으로도 우리 열심히 일하자.”
“The treasure our father was talking about were these grapes. Let’s keep working hard.”

세 아들은 그 뒤로 사이좋게 포도밭을 일구면서 행복하게 살았어요.
The three sons continued to plowed the grape field on good terms and lived happily.

Verb stem + -기 전에

-기 전에 is added after a verb stem to mean “before doing” something.

Ex)
집에 가다(to go home) + -기 전에 = 집에 가기 전에 (before going home)
만들다(to make) + -기 전에 = 만들기 전에 (before making)
만나다(to meet) + -기 전에 = 만나기 전에 (before meeting)
모으다(to gather) + -기 전에 = 모으기 전에 (before gathering)
