Slow Version 6

욕심 많은 개
Greedy Dog

어느 마을에 개가 한 마리 살고 있었어요.
In a village, there lived a dog.

그 개는 욕심이 정말 많았어요.
The dog was very greedy.

어느 날 욕심 많은 개가 큰 고깃덩어리를 갖게 되었어요.
One day, the greedy dog got a big chunk of meat.

욕심 많은 개는 고깃덩어리를 입에 물고 다리를 건너갔어요.
The greedy dog crossed a bridge while holding the meat in his mouth.

다리를 지나가던 개는 우연히 다리 밑의 강물을 쳐다보았어요.
The dog, while passing over the bridge, looked at the river water below the bridge by accident.

그런데 물속에서 어떤 개가 큰 고깃덩어리를 입에 물고 있는 거예요.
And in the water, a dog was holding a big chunk of meat in his mouth.

욕심 많은 개는 깜짝 놀랐어요.
The greedy dog was surprised.

‘저 개의 고기가 내 고기보다 훨씬 크잖아.’
‘That dog’s meat is much bigger than my meat.’

욕심 많은 개는 강물에 비친 개가 다른 개라고 생각했어요.
The greedy dog thought the dog reflected on the river water was a different dog.

‘저 개의 고기도 내가 다 먹고 싶어. 어떻게 하지?’
‘I want to eat all that dog’s meat too. What should I do?’

욕심 많은 개는 어떻게 하면 저 고기도 먹을 수 있을까 고민했어요.
The greedy dog thought hard about how to eat that dog’s meat as well.

욕심 많은 개는 크게 짖기 시작했어요.
The greedy dog started barking loudly.

“그 고기를 나한테 내놔.”
Give me that meat.

그러자 욕심 많은 개가 물고 있던 고깃덩어리가 물속으로 풍덩 떨어졌어요.
And the chunk of meat that the greedy dog was holding in his mouth fell ‘plop!’ into the water.

욕심 많은 개는 깜짝 놀랐지만 이미 늦었어요.
The greedy dog was surprised but it was too late.

그제서야 물속에 있던 개가 자신의 모습이었음을 알게 된 개는 크게 후회를 했답니다.
Only then, the dog realized the that dog in the water was his own reflection and deeply regretted.

Grammar point

Verb stem + -았/었/였던

-던 alone is enough to show the meaning of “used to do something” and the meaning of discontinuation, but in order to emphasize the fact that it was in the past, people often put the -았/었/였 suffix between the verb stem and -던.

Ex)
만나다 (to meet) + -았던 = 만났던 = 만나던 (whom I used to meet)
좋아하다 (to like) + -였던 = 좋아했던 = 좋아하던 (that I used to like)
먹다 (to eat) + -었던 = 먹었던 = 먹던 (that I used to eat)
