유승완: 안녕하세요. 유승완입니다.
Seung-wan: Hello. This is Seung-wan Yu.

김예지: 승완 씨, 오늘의 표현은 “심심해요” 그리고 “지루해요”예요. 이 표현은 제 조카들이 많이 써요.
Yeji: Seung-wan, today's expressions are "심심해요" and "지루해요." My nieces and nephews use these expressions a lot.

유승완: 아, 조카! 예지 씨 언니의 아들 그리고 딸이요?
Seung-wan: Oh, "조카"! You mean your sister's sons and daughters?

김예지: 네, 맞아요! 조카! 제 조카들이 지금 6살, 8살이에요. 매일 저한테 이 말을 해요. “이모, 심심해요.”
Yeji: Yes, right! Nieces and nephews! My nieces are now 6 years old and 8 years old. They say this to me every day. "Aunt, I'm bored."

유승완: 아, 맞아요. 어린아이들이 이 말을 많이 해요. 심심해요. 심심해요!
Seung-wan: Oh, right. Children say this a lot. "I'm bored. I'm bored!"

김예지: ‘심심하다'는 할 일이 없어서 재미가 없다는 뜻이에요. “할 것이 없어요. 그래서 심심해요.” 승완 씨는 언제 심심해요?
Yeji: "심심하다" means that you have nothing to do so it is not fun. "I have nothing to do. So, I'm bored." When do you feel bored, Seung-wan?

유승완: 저는 주말에 심심해요. 집에서 할 것이 없어요. 그래서 TV만 보는데 너무 심심해요.
Seung-wan: I feel bored on weekends. There is nothing to do at home. So I only watch TV and I feel bored.

김예지: 아, 맞아요. 저도 주말에 심심할 때가 있어요.
Yeji: Oh, right. I also feel bored on weekdays sometimes.

유승완: 예지 씨는요?
Seung-wan: What about you, Yeji?

김예지: 음… 저는 조카들이랑 놀이터에서 놀 때 심심해요.
Yeji: Hm… I feel bored when I play with my nieces and nephews in the playground.

유승완: 네? 예지 씨, 나쁜 이모예요!
Seung-wan: What? Yeji, you're a bad aunt!

김예지: 아니에요! 네… 맞아요. 조카들이랑 놀이터에서 놀 때 심심해요. 저는 놀이터 재미없어요. 조카들만 재밌어요. 그래서 저는 심심해요. 그런데 조카들을 위해서 같이 놀아요.
Yeji: No! Yeah… right. I feel bored when I play with my nieces and nephews in the playground. I don't find the playground fun. (The playground) is fun only for my nieces and nephews. So, I feel bored. But I play together for my nieces and nephews.

유승완: 오, 좋은 이모네요!
Seung-wan: Oh, you're a good aunt!

김예지: 그래요? 고마워요! 승완 씨, 그럼 ‘지루하다'는 무슨 뜻이에요?
Yeji: Yeah? Thank you! Seung-wan, then what does "지루하다" mean?

유승완: ‘지루하다'는 ‘심심하다'랑 같은 뜻이에요. 할 것이 없어서 재미가 없다는 뜻이에요. “저는 지금 지루해요”, “저는 지금 심심해요.”
Seung-wan: "지루하다" has the same meaning as "심심하다." It means that you're bored because you have nothing to do. "I'm bored now", "I'm bored now."

김예지: 아, 그러면 ‘지루하다'랑 ‘심심하다'는 똑같아요?
Yeji: Oh, then are "지루하다" and "심심하다" the same?

유승완: 아, 그런데 ‘지루하다'는 어떤 것이 재미가 없을 때도 써요. “영화가 지루해요”, “드라마가 지루해요”, “이 책이 지루해요” 이렇게 말해요. 그런데 ‘심심하다’는 사람 그리고 동물한테만 써요. “영화가 심심해요” 이렇게 말하지 않아요. “드라마가 심심해요” 이것도 안 돼요. “제가 심심해요”, “예지 씨, 심심해요?” 이렇게 말해요.
Seung-wan: Ah, but you also use "지루하다" when something is not fun. You say, "The movie is boring", "The drama is boring" or "This book is boring." But you only use "심심하다" for people and animals. You don't say, "영화가 심심해요." "드라마가 심심해요" doesn't work, either. You say, "제가 심심해요" or "예지 씨, 심심해요?"

김예지: 맞아요! “이 책이 지루해요”, “저 지금 지루해요” 이렇게 말해요. 그런데 “책이 심심해요” 이렇게 말하지 않아요. “제가 심심해요” 이렇게는 말할 수 있어요.
Yeji: Right! "This book is boring", "I'm bored now", you can like these. But you don't say "책이 심심해요." (On the other hand), you can say, "제가 심심해요."

유승완: 맞아요! 그러면 우리 대화 들어 봐요!
Seung-wan: Right! Then, let's listen to the dialogue!

Seung-wan: Yeji, is the drama fun?

김예지: 아니요. 정말 지루해요. 재미없어요.
Yeji: No, it's really boring. It's not fun.

유승완: 그래요? 저는 안 심심해요.
Seung-wan: Yeah? I'm not bored.

Seung-wan: Everyone, is today's lesson boring or not boring?

김예지: 안 지루해요! 재미있어요!
Yeji: It's not boring! It's fun!
