Lesson 26

In this Advanced Idiomatic Expressions lesson, we give you 12 phrases related to 시간 (time) that you can use when you want to say “I do not have time”, “stop wasting time”, “do you have enough time?” and so on. The sentences in this series do not have an exact word-by-word breakdown, but they do have an English translation. 1. 시간을 내다 = to make time for something/someone

Ex)
잠깐 시간 좀 내 줄 수 있어요?
= Can you make some time for me?

2. 이러고 있을 시간이 없다 = to not have time for this
▷ 이러고 있다 is short for 이렇게 하고 있다 (= to be doing this, to be doing it like this)
▷ -(으)ㄹ 시간 = time for something, time to do something

Ex)
지금 이러고 있을 시간이 없어요.
= You do not have time for this.
우리 지금 이러고 있을 시간이 없어요.
= We do not have time for this.
지금 이러고 있을 시간이 어디 있어요?
= You do not have time for this. (lit: Where is the time for doing this?)

3. 그럴 시간 있으면 = if you have that kind of time
▷ 그럴 시간 = time for doing such a thing, that kind of time

Ex)
그럴 시간 있으면 공부나 하세요.
= If you have that kind of time, just study.
* This is what teachers or parents usually say to their students or children when they are not studying. Sometimes, parents also say this with the meaning of, “You did not have to do that” when they receive a gift from their children.

4. 시간을 할애하다 = to spare some time
▷ 할애하다 = (formal) to spend, to spare

Ex)
이번 프로젝트에 시간을 많이 할애해 주세요.
= Please spend a lot of time on this project.

5. 한국 시간으로 = in Korean local time

If you want to say the time in a certain time zone, you can just say the country or city name and then 시간. For example, “뉴욕 시간으로 (= in New York local time)”, “일본 시간으로 (= in Japanese local time)”, etc.

Ex)
한국 시간으로 5월 2일 오후 7시에 시작할 거예요.
= It will begin at 7 p.m. on May 2nd in Korean local time.

6. 좀처럼 시간이 안 나다 = just cannot find the time
▷ 좀처럼 adds the nuance of, “I really tried, but I just cannot seem to do it.”

Ex)
여행을 가고 싶은데 좀처럼 시간이 안 나네요.
= I want to travel, but I just cannot find the time.

7. 시간을 낭비하다 = to waste time

Ex)
괜히 시간 낭비하지 말고 그냥 돌아가세요.
= Stop wasting your time and just go back home.
* 괜히 = for nothing, in vain

8. 시간이 남아돌다 = to have some spare time lying around
▷ 남다 = to remain, to be left
▷ 남아돌다 = to be more than enough, to be in excess

Ex)
제가 시간이 남아도는 줄 아세요?
= Do you think I have that much time to waste?

9. -(으)ㄹ 시간도 없다 = to not even have time for

Ex)
아무리 바빠도 그렇죠. 잠깐 전화할 시간도 없어요?
= Even though you were really busy, you did not even have time for a quick phone call?
아무리 바빠도 그렇죠. 청소할 시간도 없어요?
= Even though you were really busy, you did not even have time to clean?
아무리 바빠도 그렇지. 잠깐 저녁 먹을 시간도 없어?
= Even though you were really busy, you did not even have time for a quick dinner?

10. 시간이 가다 = time passes, time goes by

Ex)
시간이 어떻게 가는지 모르겠어요.
= I cannot feel the passage of time.
= Time flies.

11. 시간을 되돌리다 = to turn back time
▷ 돌리다 = to turn something
▷ 되- = back (to the original)
▷ 되돌리다 = to turn it back

Ex)
시간을 되돌릴 수 있으면 좋겠어요.
= I wish I could turn back time to the past.

12. 시간을 보내다 = to spend time doing something

Ex)
저는 주말에는 가족들하고 시간을 보내요.
= I spend time with my family on the weekends.
