Lesson 9
Lesson 9. ㄴ Insertion: Why isn't 꽃잎 pronounced 꼬칲?
Compounds
Words created by combining two or more independent words.
Ex)
꽃잎 (꽃 + 잎) petal
색연필 (색 + 연필) colored pencil
Derivatives
Words formed by adding affixes (prefixes/suffixes) to a root word.
Ex)
사랑하다 (사랑 + -하다) to love
맨발 (맨- + 발) bare feet
When it comes to compounds and derivatives, if the first syllable ends with a consonant, and the second one starts with 이, 야, 여, 요, or 유, you add ㄴ when you pronounce them.
Ex)
꽃잎 [꼰닙] petal
색연필 [생년필] colored pencil
If the first word of a compound or a derivative ends with ㄹ, the added ㄴ is pronounced as ㄹ.
Ex)
서울역 [서울력] Seoul station
물약 [물략] liquid medicine
