Lesson 15. Differentiating ㅈ, ㅊ, and ㅉ

Expressions that begin in ㅈ:

자 [자] ruler
주연 [주연] Jooyeon (a person’s name)
자전거 [자전거] bicycle

Expressions that begin in ㅊ:

차 [차] tea
추워요. [추워요.] It’s cold.
친구 [친구] friend

Expressions that use ㅈ and ㅊ within the same word:

자동차 [자동차] car
주차장 [주차장] parking lot

Expressions that begin in ㅉ:

짜요. [짜요.] It’s salty.
짱 [짱] best (slang)

Expressions that use ㅉ and ㅈ within the same word:

찜질방 [찜질방] public bathhouse, sauna
짜증 나. [짜증 나.] It’s annoying.

Expressions where the only difference are these consonants, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅉ:

차장 [차장] deputy chief
자장 [자장] magnetic field
짜장 [짜장] Black bean sauce

차요. [차요.] Kick.
자요. [자요.] Sleep.
짜요. [짜요.] It’s salty.

Sentence examples that contain more than one of these sounds:

1. 차장님이 시킨 짜장면이 너무 짜요.
[차장니미 시킨 짜장며니 너무 짜요.]
The jjajangmyeon that the deputy chief ordered is too salty.

2. 주연 씨가 주차장에 자전거를 주차해서 짜증 나요.
[주연 씨가 주차장에 자전거를 주차해서 짜증 나요.]
Jooyeon parked her bicycle in the parking lot. That’s annoying.
