Lesson 20

Lesson 20. 오 vs. 어

Words that use the vowel ㅗ:

오 [오] five
오이 [오이] cucumber
고기 [고기] meat
오후 [오후] afternoon

Words that use the vowel ㅓ:

어 [어] umm, yes, huh
어이 [어이] the handgrip of a millstone
없다 [업따] to not exist
거기 [거기] there

Expressions where the only difference are these vowels, ㅗ, and ㅓ:

오이 [오이] cucumber
어이 [어이] the handgrip of a millstone

고기 [고기] meat
거기 [거기] there

오후 [오후] afternoon
어후 [어후] sigh (This is not a word that you can find in the dictionary. It’s an onomatopoeia used to describe how people speak with awe or sigh.)

Sentence examples that contain more than one of these sounds:

2. 오이가 없다고? 어이가 없네.
