Lesson 23. When Spelling and Pronunciation Are Different
Native Korean speakers tend to pronounce ㅈ as ㅉ in some cases.
Ex)

좀 [좀, 쫌] a bit
좀 매워요. [좀/쫌 매워요.] It’s a bit spicy.
(2)
조금 [조금, 쪼금, 쪼끔] a little
이거 조금 비싸요. [이거 조금/쪼금/쪼끔 비싸요.] This is a little expensive.
조금만 먹을게요. [조금만/쪼금만/쪼끔만 머글께요.] I’ll just eat a little.

작다 [작따, 짝따] to be small
작은 [자근, 짜근] small
우와, 신발 진짜 작다! [우와, 신발 진짜 작따/짝따!] Wow, these shoes are really small!
저는 작은 거 주세요. [저는 자근/짜근 거 주세요.] Please give me the small one.

좁다 [좁따, 쫍따] to be narrow
좁은 [조븐, 쪼븐] narrow
세상 진짜 좁다. [세상 진짜 좁따/쫍따.] It’s such a small world.
좁은 길은 운전하기 힘들어요. [조븐/쪼븐 기른 운전하기 힘드러요.] It’s hard to drive on a narrow road.

자르다 [자르다, 짜르다] to cut
잘라 드릴까요? [잘라/짤라 드릴까요?] Do you want me to cut it?
역시 작은 차라 안이 좀 좁네. [역씨 자근/짜근 차라 아니 좀/쫌 좀네/쫌네.] As expected, it’s a small car so the inside is a bit small.
머리 조금만 잘라 주세요. [머리 조금만/쪼금만/쪼끔만 잘라/짤라 주세요.]Please just cut a little bit of my hair.
ㅈ is not the only consonant affected by this phenomenon. A very common word, the word for strong, which begins in ㅅ is also pronounced in a tense form.
Ex)
세다 [세다, 쎄다] to be strong
센 [센, 쎈] strong
세게 [세게, 쎄게] strongly
우와, 힘 진짜 세다! [우와, 힘 진짜 세다/쎄다!] Wow, you’re really strong!
센 불에 익히세요. [센/쎈 부레 이키세요.] Cook it over high heat.
바람이 너무 세게 불어. [바라미 너무 세게/쎄게 부러.] The wind is blowing so hard.
Also with some words beginning in ㄷ such as the following words.

다른 사람들은 어딨어요? [다른/따른 사람드른 어디써요?] Where is everyone else?

닦다 [닥따, 딱따] to wash
이 닦았어요? [이 다까써요/따까써요?] Did you brush your teeth?
Lastly, the word for “continuously” which starts with ㄱ is also pronounced in a tense form.
Ex)
계속 [계:속, 게:속, 꼐:속, 께:속] continuously
계속 전화 와요. [계:속/게:속/꼐:속/께:속 전화 와요.] I keep getting phone calls.
Sentence examples that contain more than one of these sounds:
1. 계속 세게 밀어 보세요. 우와, 힘 진짜 세다!
[계:속/게:속/꼐:속/께:속 세게/쎄게 미러 보세요. 우와, 힘 진짜 세다/쎄다!]
Try to keep pushing hard. Wow! You’re really strong!
2. 다른 거울도 세게 닦아 주세요.
[다른/따른 거울도 세게/쎄게 다까/따까 주세요.]
Please wipe down the other mirror hard, too.
