Lesson 16. Differentiating ㄱ, ㅋ, and ㄲ
Expressions that begin in ㄱ:
강남 [강남] Gangnam (the name of an area in Seoul)
고양이 [고양이] cat
개 [개] dog
Expressions that begin in ㅋ:
키 [키] height
크다 [크다] to be big
키가 크다 [키가 크다] to be tall
Expressions that use ㅋ and ㄱ within the same word:
코감기 [코감기] sinus cold
콩국수 [콩국쑤] soybean noodles
Expressions that begin in ㄲ:
끝 [끋] end
꼭대기 [꼭때기] top
꿀 [꿀] honey
Expressions that use ㅋ and ㄲ within the same word:
코끝 [코끋] the tip of the nose
코끼리 [코끼리] elephant
Expressions where the only difference are these consonants, ㄱ, ㅋ, ㄲ:
굴 [굴] oysters
쿨 [쿨] *not a word (It’s used when Koreans spell “cool” with Hangeul.)
꿀 [꿀] honey
가요. [가요.] I go.
카요. [카요.] *not a word
까요. [까요.] I peel.
Sentence examples that contain more than one of these sounds:
1. 산꼭대기에서 먹는 귤이 꿀처럼 달아요.
[산꼭때기에서 멍는 규리 꿀처럼 다라요.]
The mandarins that we eat on the mountaintop are sweet as honey.
2. 강남에서 키가 큰 고양이를 봤어요.
[강나메서 키가 큰 고양이를 봐써요.]
I saw a tall cat in Gangnam.
