Lesson 6

Lesson 6. Assimilation Part 2: ㄴ always becomes ㄹ when it's with ㄹ.

When a syllable that ends with ㅁ or ㅇ is followed by a syllable that begins with ㄹ, the ㄹ is pronounced as ㄴ.

Ex)
강릉 [강능] Gangneung (the name of a city in Korea)
대통령 [대통녕] president
담력 [담:녁] courage, nerve

When a syllable that ends with ㄱ or ㅂ is followed by a syllable that begins with ㄹ, the ㄹ is again pronounced as ㄴ.

Ex)
합류 [함뉴] join, meet
막론 [망논] is the stem of the verb 막론하다 (to go without question).

When ㄴ meets ㄹ or ㄹ meets ㄴ, the pronunciation of the ㄴ always changes to ㄹ.

Ex)
줄넘기 [줄럼끼] jump rope
틀니 [틀리] dentures
난로 [날로] heater, stove
관리 [괄리] management

When a syllable ends with a compound consonant that is pronounced as ㄹ, such as ㄾ, ㅀ, and is followed by a syllable that starts with ㄴ, the ㄴ is pronounced as ㄹ.

Ex)
핥는 [할른] = 핥다 (to lick) + -는 (suffix)
앓는 [알른] = 앓다 (to suffer) + -는 (suffix)
