발이 넓다
= to know a lot of people, to have a lot of acquaintances

1. 저는 발이 커요. = I have big feet.
2. 구두가 작아서 발이 아파요. = My shoes are small so my feet hurt.
3. 발이 부었어요. = My feet are swollen.

넓다 = to be wide, to be spacious

1. 이 방은 정말 넓어요. = This room is very spacious.
2. 저는 이마가 넓어요. = I have a big forehead.
제3.  방은 별로 넓지 않아요. = My room is not very spacious.

Meaning Of The Phrase
이 표현을 말 그대로 번역하면 발이 크다는 뜻이지만, 실제로는 다른 뜻으로 사용됩니다. 어떤 사람의 발이 넓다고 생각해 보세요. 그 사람은 많은 곳을 갈 수 있고 많은 사람들을 만날 수 있을 것 같지 않나요? 그래서 어떤 사람이 아는 사람이 많을 때, “발이 넓다”라고 표현합니다. 그렇다고 해서 친구가 많다는 뜻은 아닙니다.

The literal translation of this phrase is to have wide or big feet, but its actual usage is different. When you think of someone who has wide feet, you can imagine them being able to cover a lot of ground, or being able to reach a lot of people. So this phrase means that the person has a lot of acquaintances or knows a lot of people. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they have a lot of friends, though.

= He is well-connected.

2. 발이 정말 넓으시네요.
= You really know a lot of people.

3. 어떻게 그렇게 발이 넓어요?
= How do you know so many people?

4. 저는 그렇게 발이 넓은 편은 아니에요.
= I don’t know that many people.

5. 저도 발이 넓었으면 좋겠어요.
= I wish I knew a lot of people, too..

6. 저 사람이 발이 넓다고 들었어요.
= I heard he has a lot of connections.

7. 그렇게 발이 넓으시다면서요?
= I heard you are really well-connected.

8. 저 사람은 아는 사람이 정말 많아요. 진짜 발이 넓어요.
= He knows so many people. He is really well-connected.

9. 발이 넓은 친구가 한 명 있어요. 소개해 줄까요?
= I have a friend who is well-connected. Do you want me to introduce you to him?

10. 저는 발이 넓어서 아는 사람은 많은데, 진짜 친한 친구는 별로 없어요.
= I am well-connected so I know a lot of people, but I don’t have that many close friends.

네. ‘발’과 ‘넓다’.

네. 발은 워낙 많이 말해서 이제 다 알 것 같아요. 그렇죠? / 네.
Yes. I think everybody already knows 발 because we’ve talked about it so much, right? / Yes.

발은 알고요, ‘넓다’는 뭐죠?
You know 발 and what is 넓다?

‘넓다’는 ‘크다’랑 비슷한 말인데요.
넓다 is a word that’s similar to 크다.

‘크다’라는 표현은 여러 가지 모든 것에 쓰이지만
크다 (to be big) is an expression that is used about various many things, but

‘넓다’라는 표현은 납작한 물건이나 바닥, 이런 곳이 클 때 우리가 ‘넓다’라고 얘기해요.
넓다 (to be spacious, wide) is used when a flat object or the floor is big.

근데 발음이 조금 어렵죠?
But the pronunciation is a bit difficult, right?

네. 그렇죠.

‘너’ 밑에는 ㄹ과 ㅂ이 있어서 어떻게 발음해야 될지 모르실 것 같아요.
Below 너, there is ㄹ and ㅂ, so maybe people don’t know how to pronounce it.

이 ㄹ과 ㅂ이 변하는 거죠.
This ㄹ and ㅂ change.

You use it a lot like this. Can you guess what it means?

그리고 아까 저희가 [널따]라고 발음한다고 말씀드렸는데
And earlier, we said that you have to pronounce it as 널따.

이 예문에서는 모음이 뒤에 오니까 ㅂ이 사라지지 않고 그대로 남아 있었죠?
But in this sample sentence, there is a vowel following right after, so ㅂ didn’t disappear and it remained, right?

네. 제가 말한 예문에서 “발이 [널븐] 친구가”, 이렇게 말을 했어요.
Yes. In the sentence I said “발이 [널븐] 친구”.

맞아요. 저는 “발이 [널버요].” 이렇게 말했고요.
Yes. I said 발이 [널버요].

뒤에 모음이 오면 ㅂ이 살아난다는 거 기억하세요.
If a vowel comes after, ㅂ comes back alive. Remember that.

그러면 자세히 설명해 볼까요?

“발이 넓다.”, 무슨 뜻이죠?
발이 넓다. What does it mean?

“발이 크다.”가 아니라 “발이 넓다.”라고 표현한 것은 우리가 발바닥에 집중한 거예요. 그렇죠?
We didn’t say 발이 크다 but 발이 넓다. And that’s because we focused on the sole of the foot, right?

네. 그렇죠.
Yes. That’s right.

그래서 사람의 발 크기를 이야기하는 게 아니고요.
So we are not talking about someone’s foot size.

발이 넓어서 아는 사람이 많다. 이런 뜻이에요.
It means that this person has wide feet, so they know a lot of people.

맞아요. 발의 크기를 말을 할 때는 “저 사람은 발이 커. 나는 발이 작아.” 이렇게 말을 하는데,
Right. When you are talking about someone’s foot size, you say the person is 발이 커, and I am 발이 작아.

“발이 넓다.”라고 말을 할 때는 아는 사람이 정말 많은 사람을 보고 이렇게 이야기를 하죠.
And when you say 발이 넓다, you say that about someone who really knows a lot of people.

그런데 “발이 좁다.” 이런 말은 없어요. 그렇죠?
But there is no such expression as 발이 좁다, right?

맞아요. 그런 말은 하지 않아요.
Right. We don’t say that.
