잠수를 타다
= to become unreachable, to not answer phone calls or text messages

Meaning Of The Phrase
이 표현을 말 그대로 번역하면 뜻이 조금 이상하게 느껴질 수 있어요. ‘잠수’라는 것이 실제로 ‘탈 수 있는’ 것이 아니기 때문입니다. 그런데 ‘잠수’를 하는 것을 생각해 보면, 물속에서 전화나 문자 메시지를 받기가 힘들겠죠? 그래서 이 표현은 어떤 사람이 연락이 안 될 때를 가리키는 말인데, 우연히 또는 실수로 연락이 안 되는 것이 아니고, 일부러 전화를 받지 않거나 문자 메시지에 답장을 하지 않는 경우에 쓰입니다. 아주 캐주얼한 상황에서 쓰이는 표현이기 때문에, 격식을 갖춘 문맥에서는 안 쓰는 것이 좋습니다.

The literal translation of this phrase is a bit strange, because submergence is not something that you actually “ride”. But the implied meaning is that you are “underwater” so you can’t be reached either by phone, text message or e-mail. This phrase is used not when someone is accidentally unreachable, but when they deliberately don’t pick up the phone or don’t answer text messages due to various reasons. This is a very casual expression, so it is not recommended in a formal setting.

잠수. 잠수가 뭐죠?
잠수. What is 잠수?

잠수. 한자어네요. 그렇죠? / 네.
잠수. It’s a Hanja-based word, right? / Yes.

잠수, ‘잠’은 잠기다, “물속에 잠기다.”라는 뜻이고요.
잠 means to be submerged in the water.

‘수’는 물이라는 뜻이라서, 물속에 잠기는 것을 잠수라고 해요.
수 means water. So being submerged in the water is 잠수.

그러면 ‘타다’는 뭐죠? ‘타다’.
Then what is 타다?

‘타다’는 사실 수십 가지의 뜻을 가지고 있는 단어인데요. / 맞아요.
타다 is actually a word that has dozens of meanings. / Right.

여기서는 ‘하다’라는 말과 비슷하게 생각하시면 되는데,

우리가 보통 시간이나 기회나 이런 것을 이용할 때 ‘타다’라는 말을 써요.
When we talk about using time or an opportunity, we usually say 타다.

예를 들어서 저희가 “발 디딜 틈이 없다.” 할 때 ‘틈’ 배웠잖아요.
For example, we learned the word 틈(gap) when we covered 발 디딜 틈이 없다.

그 ‘틈’은 우리가 이렇게 벌어진 틈을 말할 때도 쓰지만,
That 틈(gap) is used when we talk about a gap of space, too,

시간 사이가 벌어졌을 때도 ‘틈’이라고 하는데요.
but you can also say it to mean a gap of time.

우리가 “틈을 타다.”, 이런 표현을 많이 하거든요.
We often use the expression 틈을 타다.

“쉬는 틈을 타서 석진 씨가 도망갔어요.”라고 하면
If you say “쉬는 틈을 타서 석진 씨가 도망갔어요.”

“쉬는 동안 석진 씨가 도망갔다.” 이런 뜻이거든요.
it means that Seokjin ran away during the break.

그래서 여기서도 “잠수를 타다.”라고 하면 잠수를 이용하는 거죠.
So here, as well, if you say 잠수를 타다, you USE 잠수.

“잠수를 타다.”라는 표현은 속어잖아요. / 네. 맞아요.

네. 그런 것처럼 ‘잠수하다’라고 속어로는 사용하지 않아요.

그런 경우에만 “잠수를 타다.”라고 이야기를 해요.
