해가 서쪽에서 뜨다
= It’s a first. It’s unusual. It’s the opposite of the usual situation.

Essential Vocabulary
해 = the sun

1. 해가 떴어요. = The sun has risen.
2. 겨울에는 해가 늦게 떠요. = The sun rises late in the winter.
3. 해가 졌어요. = The sun has set.

서쪽 = west

1. 여기에서 서쪽에 있어요. = It’s in the west from here.
2. 서쪽으로 20킬로미터 가세요. = Go 20 kilometers to the west.
3. 바람이 서쪽에서 불고 있어요. = The wind is blowing from the west.

뜨다 = to rise, to float, to rise in popularity

1. 해가 뜨고 있어요. = The sun is rising.
2. 수영은 못 하는데, 물에 뜰 수는 있어요. = I can’t swim, but I can float on the water.
3. 요즘 이게 뜨고 있어요. = This is becoming popular these days.

Meaning Of The Phrase
엄청난 변화가 일어나지 않는 한, 해는 변함없이 동쪽에서 뜨겠죠? 누구나 매일 예상할 수 있는 일이 바로 해가 동쪽에서 뜨는 것입니다. 그래서 누군가 아주 평소와 다르거나 예상 밖의 행동을 하면, 놀랍다는 반응으로, 아니면 비꼬는 의미로 이렇게 말할 수 있어요. 해가 그날 서쪽에서 떴는지, 아니면 내일 해가 서쪽에서 뜰 것인지를 물어봄으로써, 상대방이 한 행동이 아주 놀랍거나 평소와는 반대되는 행동이라는 것을 나타낼 수 있어요.

Unless some drastic changes occur, you can consistently rely on the sun to rise from the east. It is something that you can expect to see every day without fail. So when someone does something very unusual or very unexpected of them, you can say this phrase to show your surprise or sarcasm. By asking either whether the sun has risen from the west that day or whether the sun will rise from the west the next day, you can imply that what the other person did or is doing is very surprising and contrary to the ordinary.

단어 설명해 볼게요. 첫 번째 단어는 뭐죠?

해. ‘해’ 입니다.

하늘에 떠 있는 해. 해가 뜨면 밝아지죠?
The sun in the sky. When the sun rises, it becomes bright, right?

서쪽은 방향을 네 곳으로 나누면, 우리가 북쪽을 바라보고 서 있을 때
The west is when you divide the directions into four and when we are standing looking to the north,

오른쪽이 동쪽, 왼쪽이 서쪽이죠.
on your right is the east, and on your left is the west.

해가 뜨는 쪽은 동쪽이죠?

그러면 ‘뜨다’. 저희 아까 계속 ‘뜨다’라는 말 했어요.
And 뜨다. We kept saying 뜨다 earlier.

‘뜨다’라는 말은 ‘올라가다’, 이런 뜻이에요.
뜨다 means to go up.

그런데 주로 물 위로 올라가거나, 땅에서 공중으로 올라가는 것을 말해요.

So when something unbelievable has happened,

우리가 “해가 서쪽에서 떴나?” 아니면
we say “Did the sun rise from the west?” or

“해가 서쪽에서 뜨겠네.”라고 이야기해요.
“The sun will rise from the west.”

네, 맞아요. 진짜 진짜 말도 안 되는 일이었을 때 이야기를 하는 건데요.
That’s right. We are talking about when something really really impossible happened.

아까 제가 예를 들었던, “오늘 운동을 한다고?”라고 이야기를 했다면
Like the example I gave you, if you said, “You are going to exercise today?”

그 사람은 정말 운동을 안 하는 사람이었던 거죠. / 그렇죠.
it means that the person really never exercises. / Right.

그래서 운동을 한다는 이야기를 들었을 때 너무 놀란 거예요.
So when you heard that the person was going to exercise, you were very surprised.

네. / 그래서 “내일 해가 서쪽에서 뜨겠네.”라고 말을 하게 된 거죠?
Yes. / So you wound up saying “The sun will rise from the west.”

네. 저도 청소를 평소에 안 하는 사람이 청소를 했다고 하니까 놀라서
