오리발 내밀다
= to lie about something, to play innocent

내밀다 = to hold out, to stick out, to extend

3. 그 사람이 먼저 손을 내밀었어요. = He held out his hand first.

Meaning Of The Phrase
만약 닭을 먹었는데, 특히 남의 닭을 잡아먹었는데 다른 사람에게 말하고 싶지 않다면, 닭발 대신에 오리발을 보여줄 수도 있겠죠? 원래 표현은 ‘닭 잡아먹고 오리발 내민다’인데요. 말 그대로 닭을 잡아먹었는데 오리를 잡아먹은 것처럼 행동한다는 뜻입니다. 이 표현은 보통 자신이 한 나쁜 행동에 대해서 거짓말을 하거나, 실제로는 죄가 있는데 죄가 없는 것처럼, 무슨 일이 일어났는지 모르는 것처럼 행동하는 걸 가리킵니다. 자주 쓰이는 표현이라서 그냥 ‘오리발’이라고만 해도 자신의 잘못을 숨기기 위해서 거짓말을 한다는 뜻이 됩니다.

If you ate a chicken, especially someone else’s chicken, and don’t want to tell others that you did, maybe you will hide the evidence or give a misleading clue, such as duck feet instead of chicken feet. The original phrase is 닭 잡아먹고 오리발 내민다, and it literally means that you eat a chicken and hold out duck feet. The phrase is usually used to describe a situation where someone is lying about something (usually bad) that they did or where someone is pretending to be innocent when they are actually guilty, or even pretending to not know what happened. The phrase is so commonly used that even if you just say the word 오리발 (duck feet), it has the meaning of “lying” or “trying to hide one’s wrongdoing”.

오리발, 뭐죠?
What is 오리발?

오리, 오리 아세요, 여러분?
오리. Do you know 오리, everyone?

동물인데요. 우리나라 소리로는 ‘꽥꽥’ 우는 동물이 오리인데요.
It’s an animal. In Korean, we say that ducks go “꽥꽥”.

물가에 살죠. / 네. 맞아요.
They live close to the water. / Yes, that’s right.

그 오리의 발을 말하는 거죠.
We are talking about the feet of those ducks.

네. 저희가 다루는 표현에서 발이 굉장히 많이 나오네요. 그렇죠?

원래 속담은 긴데, 저희가 주로 말을 할 때는 “오리발 내밀다.”라고 짧게 많이들 사용을 하죠.
