뒷북치다
= to find out about something later than others, to get excited too late

Essential Vocabulary

뒤 = back, backwords

1. 뒤를 보세요. = Look behind you.
2. 뒤에 있어요. = It’s behind you. / It’s in the back.
3. 저는 뒤에 앉아 있어요. = I’m sitting in the back.

북 = drum

1. 북 소리가 들려요. = I can hear drum sounds.
2. 큰 북이랑 작은 북이 있어요. = There is a big drum and a small drum.
3. 북이 찢어졌어요. = The drum has been torn.
북 here refers to a single drum that you can carry. When referring to the drums in a “drum set”, you call them 드럼.

치다 = to hit, to strike, to pound

1. 제가 공을 손으로 쳤어요. = I hit the ball with my hand.
2. 제가 그 사람을 주먹으로 쳤어요. = I hit him with my fist.
3. 누군가 제 머리를 쳤어요. = Somebody hit my head.

Meaning Of The Phrase
만약 다른 사람들과 함께 음악을 연주하고 있는데 자신이 드럼을 맡았다면, 박자가 늦으면 안 되겠죠? 모두가 음악 연주를 끝냈는데, 혼자서 나중에 드럼을 친다면 웃기고 창피할 거예요. “뒷북치다”라는 이 표현은 어떤 사람이 모두가 이미 알고 있는 어떤 소식에 대해서 이제 막 알게 됐거나, 어떤 사람이 한 말을 너무 늦게 이해한 경우에 쓸 수 있어요.

If you are playing music with other people and you are on the drum, you don’t want to be late with your beats. If everybody already finished playing their music but you hit your drum too late, it would be both funny and embarrassing. This phrase 뒷북치다 is used when someone just found out about some news that everybody else knows about, or understood something that someone said a little too late.

Sample Sentences
1. 뒷북치지 마.
= Don’t talk about it as if it were new.

2. 왜 혼자서 뒷북이야?
= Why are you talking about it now? It already happened a while ago.

3. 너는 왜 맨날 뒷북이야?
= Why are you always behind on the news and get excited late?

4. 왜 이제와서 뒷북치고 있어?
= Why are you talking about it now? It’s too late.

5. 아까 이야기했잖아. 왜 뒷북치고 있어?
= We already talked about it earlier. Why are you bringing it up now?

6. 벌써 다 끝났어. 뒷북치지 마.
= It’s already over. Don’t be so behind on the news.

7. 둘이 사귄다면서요? 나 또 뒷북쳤네.
= I heard those two are dating? I am late on the news again.

8. 다들 알고 있었어요? 저 또 뒷북친 거예요?
= Everybody already knew? I’m late again?

9. 저는 이미 알고 있었어요. 완전 뒷북.
= I already knew. You’re seriously behind.

10. 그건 뒷북도 너무 심한 뒷북이야.
= You’re behind, like really behind.

B: 뭐?

B: 대박. 완전 뒷북. 이미 결혼했어.

Translation
A: Eonni, did you know that?
B: What?

Translation

‘뒤’는 ‘앞’의 반대말이에요.
뒤 is the opposite of 앞.

What does 뒷북치다 mean?

우리가 행사 같은 것이 있을 때 악기를 연주하잖아요. / 네. 그렇죠.

다른 악기들과 함께 연주를 해야 되는데 그때 북을 치지 않고
You have to play it with other instruments, but you don’t hit the drum then,
