중국어를 필수 과목으로 지정한 포르투갈의 소도시

포르투갈의 한 도시에서 중국어가 8, 9세 초등학생의 필수 과목으로 지정되었습니다. 이 도시의 이름은 ‘상 조앙 다 마데이라’로, 포르투갈의 북부에 있는 작은 도시입니다. 이 도시의 인구는 2만 명 정도인데, 이 도시는 고급 수제화를 만들어 내는 도시로 유명합니다. 중국은 현재 해마다 100억 켤레 이상의 신발을 생산하고 있어서 세계 최대의 신발 생산국이지만, 좋은 품질의 포르투갈 수제화를 원하는 중국인 고객들이 늘고 있다고 합니다. 이에 따라 이 도시에서는 젊은 세대가 중국어를 통해서 더 큰 경쟁력을 갖추게 하기 위해 이러한 정책을 내놓았습니다. 포르투갈 정부는 이 도시에서 좋은 성과가 나올 경우, 전국적으로 중국어 교육을 실시할지의 여부를 결정할 것이라고 합니다.

Small City in Portugal Designates Chinese as a Required Subject

In a city in Portugal, Chinese was designated as a required subject for elementary school students of ages 8 and 9. The name of this city is São João da Madeira, and it is a small city in the northern part of Portugal. The population of this city is about 20,000, and this city is famous for producing high quality handmade shoes. China is currently making more than 10 billion pairs of shoes each year and therefore is the biggest producer of shoes in the world, but there is reportedly a growing number of Chinese customers who want good-quality Portuguese handmade shoes. Therefore, this city came up with this policy in order to help the younger generation to be equipped with more competitiveness through the use of the Chinese language. The Portuguese government said that if there are good results coming out from this city, they would decide whether or not they would start Chinese education on a national scale.
