Lesson 8

In this episode, Angela and Peter talk about convenience stores in Korea. Check out through the video various types of services and products you can get at convenience stores, Peter's favorite regular purchase as an adult, and Angela's instructions on how to eat alone at convenience stores.

1. 편의점 [펴늬점 / 펴니점]
편의점 is a convenience store. Most of them are open 24 hours.

2. 원 플러스 원
원 플러스 원 is Konglish that comes from "one plus one." It means "buy one get one free." 투 플러스 원 means "buy two get one free."

3. 회식 [회식 / 훼식]
회식 refers to a state in which a certain group of people get together to eat and drink. It generally means "company dinner" when the word is used on its own.

ex) 오늘 회식이 있어서 좀 늦을 것 같아요. I think I might be a little late because I have a company dinner today.

ex) 수영 동아리 회식이 취소됐습니다. The get-together of our swimming club has been canceled.

4. 티머니
티머니 is a transportaion card used in Korea. You can easily get one and recharge it at any convenience store.

5. 떡
떡 is a dish made with steamed grain powder that has a very chewy texture. It has a lot of different types and is usually enjoyed as a dessert or celebratory food.

6. 소떡소떡
소떡소떡 is a kind of street foods. Since you skewer a sausage and a piece of tteok on a stick repeatedly, it's called 소떡소떡. 소 is comes from the first letter of 소시지 which is Korean for sausage.

7. 호빵
호빵 refers to "steamed bun," which is filled with red bean paste. It's one of the most popular winter foods. FYI, 찐빵 is actually the term for steamed bun and 호빵 was a brand name. Now, however, they are used interchangeably.

8. 어묵
어묵 is a dish made with mashed fish flesh. It's also a very popular street food, especially in winter.

ex) 어묵 하나에 얼마예요? How much is it for one 어묵?

9. 김밥 [김밥 / 김빱]
김밥 is a dish made by rolling cooked rice and various other ingredients in 김(dried laver seaweed). There are many different kinds of 김밥 depending on what ingredients you add. It's considered a classic picnic meal or a quick meal you can grab at convenience stores or small food chains.

10. 삼각김밥 [삼각낌밥 / 삼각낌빱]
삼각 means "triangular shape," so 삼각김밥 is basically 김밥 that is made in a triangular shape. It's the quickest basic food you can get from convenience stores.
