Lesson 4
In this episode, Angela and Peter talk about driving in Korea. Check out through the video why Angela was terrified on the first day of her driving in Seoul, how they got their driver's licenses in Korea, and why they find Peter's favorite service, 대리운전, amazing.
1. 강북
강 means "river," 북 means "north," and 남 means "south." Seoul is divided by the Han River. The area north of the Han River is called 강북. The area south is called 강남, which is well known from the song "강남 스타일." To compared these two areas roughly, 강북 has been the center of the country for over hundreds of years. You can see that the majority of the old palaces in Seoul are located in 강북. Meanwhile, it's been less than 50 years since 강남 started to be developed. It has more high-rise buildings and wider roads than 강북.
2. 대리운전
대리운전 refers to a designated driver service which is widely used in Korea, generally shortend to 대리. The service is mostly used by people who need to go home with their cars after having drink.
ex1) 밤에 대리운전을 하고 있어요. I work as a designated driver at night.
ex2) 대리 부르셨어요? Did you call a designated driver?
