Lesson 1

In this episode, Angela and Peter talk about eating in Korea. Check out through the video 'no tipping' culture, what makes Peter feel like James Bond when he is at a Korean restaurant table, and the 'Excuse me bell'(?) that Angela loves so much.

1. 혼밥
혼밥, short for 혼자 밥 먹기, is a slang word which means "eating alone." It is part of a growing phenomenon as the number of single-person households increases. FYI, 혼술 is also a common slang word which means "drinking alone."

ex1) 혼밥 좋아하세요? Do you like eating alone?

ex2) 그 식당은 혼밥 하기 좋아요. The restaurant is good for eating alone.

2. 닭갈비 [닥깔비]
닭갈비 is a popular Korean dish which is made with boneless pieces of chicken ribs and different kinds of vegetables. 닭 means "chicken" and 갈비 means "rib" so it can also mean chicken rib.

3. 반찬
반찬 refers to the assorted small side dishes served along with cooked rice in Korean cuisine. It can refer to one dish or all of them as a collective name.

4. 김치
김치 is spicy pickled cabbage. It's one of the most popular Korean dishes that is made of fermented cabbage. There are many types of kimchi with different names depending on the ingredients.

5. 단무지
단무지, a yellow pickled raddish, is also a sort of 반찬 but you eat it to cleanse the palate rather than having it with cooked rice together.

6 서비스
It's a Konglish word(a Korean word that are derived from English) which has come from the word "service." It refers to something that is on the house, provided for free by the restaurant.

ex) 이건 서비스예요! It's on the house!

7. 벨
여기요 벨 and 저기요 벨 are actually not fixed terms that are used. 여기요 and 저기요 which mean "excuse me" are what you usually say to call the waiter.
ex) 더 시키자. 벨 눌러 봐! Let's order more. Press the bell!

8. 믹스커피
It's called 믹스커피(mix coffee) or 커피믹스(coffee mix). It's a sort of instant coffee that is pre-mixed with non-dairy creamer and sugar that you can have conveniently by just pouring into a hot water or milk.

9. 참치
참치 is tuna.

10. 먹자골목 [먹짜골목]
먹자 means "Let's eat" and 골목 means "alley," so 먹자골목 can literally be translated to "Let's eat alley." It refers to a street where a lot of restaurants are located closely together.

11. 골목
골목 means "alley." It's used for a narrow path between houses or buildings.

12. 동
동 is the smallest level of urban-area division to have its own office and staff in South Korea.
