Situation

1. 골키퍼가 공을 막았어요.

*막다 = to block, to stop
 

2. 그 사람에게 사과를 받을 거예요.
= I’m going to receive an apology from him/her.
그 사람에게 사과를 받아 낼 거예요.

*받다 = to receive, to get

Meaning

내다 (original meaning)

= to make (something appear), to publish

내다 (as a helping verb)

: the main verb action is (successfully) done (the process was challenging)

Examples

1. 정말 힘든 시간을 견뎠어요.
= I endured very difficult times.

정말 힘든 시간을 견뎌 냈어요.
= I endured very difficult times. (I made it.)
*견디다 = to endure, to bear

2. 우리는 더 좋은 방법을 생각해야 해요.
= We need to think of a better way.
우리는 더 좋은 방법을 생각해 내야 해요.
= We need to think out/come up with a better way.

 3. 소방관이 아이를 구했어요.
= The firefighter saved a kid.
소방관이 아이를 구해 냈어요.
= The firefighter saved a kid. (He/she made it. The situation was tough.)
*구하다 = to rescue, to save

 4. 마침내 타임머신을 발명했어요.
= Finally, I invented a time machine.
마침내 타임머신을 발명해 냈어요.
= Finally, I invented a time machine. (​​I made it. It wasn’t easy.)
*발명하다 = to invent
