Situation

 

  1. 먹지 않으면 음식이 식어요.
    = If you don’t eat it, the food gets cold.
    빨리 와서 먹어요. 음식이 식어 가요.
    = Come quickly and eat. _________________________ . 
    먹지 않아서 음식이 식었어요.
    = Since you didn’t eat, the food got cold.

*식다 = to get cold, to cool down

 2. 1시간 뒤면 하루가 끝나요.
= In an hour, the day ends.
밤 11시예요. 하루가 끝나 가요.
= It’s 11 at night.                                             .
밤 12시예요. 하루가 끝났어요.
= It’s 12 at night. The day ended.

 

Meaning

가다 (original meaning)

= to go

 

가다 (as a helping verb)

: the main verb action or situation is going on (progressing towards a certain point)

 

Examples

  1. 거의 다 해 가요.
    = I’m almost done.

 2. 잘돼 가요?
= Is it going well?
*잘되다 = to go well

 3. 시들어 가는 꽃
= A withering flower
*시들다 = to wither


부부가 점점 닮아 가요.
= The (married) couple gradually look more and more alike.
