Lesson 29

 Do you remember the previous lessons in this book over irregularities with ㅂ, 르, and ㄷ? Of course you do! Now that you have become a master of irregularities, learning “Irregular ㅅ” will be no match for you!

When ㅅ is the 받침 of a verb stem and it is followed by a vowel, the ㅅ is dropped.

Ex

낫다 = to heal; to recover; to be better (in comparison)

낫 + 아요 (present tense) → 나아요

= It is better. / Please feel better.

젓다 = to stir (liquid)

젓 + 어요 (present tense) → 저어요

= I stir. / Please stir it.

잇다 = to connect; to link

잇 + 었어요 (past tense) = 이었어요

= I connected (it). / I linked (it).

짓다 = to build; to compose

짓 + 었어요 (past tense) = 지었어요

= I built it. / I composed it.

Sample Sentences

 잘 저으세요.

= Stir it well.

두 개를 이었어요.

= I connected the two (objects).

이 집을 누가 지었어요?

= Who built this house?

좋은 이름을 지을 거예요.

= I am going to create a good name.

감기 다 나았어요?

= Did you recover (completely) from the cold?

Exceptions

There are some verb stems in which the “ㅅ” 받침 is regular, meaning that the ㅅ is not dropped and it stays the same.

Ex)

웃다 = to smile; to laugh

웃어요. = Smile. / I smile. / He laughs. / They laugh.

씻다 = to wash

씻을 거예요. = I am going to wash up. / I am going to wash it.

벗다 = to take (clothes) off

신발을 벗어 주세요. = Please take your shoes off.
